Questions And
Answers

Q. I take care of a woman’s
children in her home Monday
to Friday for $25 a week. She
doesn’t pay any Social Secur
ity on my wages or deduct any
thing from my weekly checks.
I’m not yet ready to retire,
but I want to be sure I get the
right credit for work. Is there
anything I can do?
A. Call the Asheville So
cial Security office, 252-8773
as soon as possible. We will
look into your case and see
that you get the correct So
cial Security credit for your
work.
Q. I was taken ill while I
was on vacation in another
state. After I got home, I sent
my bills to Medicare like I al
ways do, but they returned
them to me and told me to
make the claim where I was
sick. Why can’t I file my Med
icare claim here?
A. Generally, your Medi
care claim must be filed with
the Medicare office in the
state where you received the
Medicare services. In this
way, Medicare can keep track
of costs of particular medi
cal services within an area.
YOUR MEDICARE HAND
BOOK gives a complete list
of places where Medicare
claims arc to be submitted.
Q. I recently got a job as a
waitress. Even though my
wages are not much, my tips
usually averages $45 a week.
My employer says I must tell
him how much I get in tips so
he can report them for Social
Security. Is this so?
A. Yes, because your tips
are more than $20 a month.
The law requires you to give
your employer a report in
writing by the 10th of each
month on the tips you receiv
ed the previous month. Your
employer then reports these
tips and sends your Social Se
curity cotributions to IRS.
Your tips for this month
must be reported by January
10th.
If your tips were less than
$20 a month, you would not
have to report them.
