It seems to have originated and develop ed in realtively isolated man ner with very little or no out side genetic influence. France’s history reveals that cattle very similar to the pres ent Limousin were in this area during the Roman occupation before the time of Christ. It was then known as the Acqui taine region. Prehistoric cave paintings, estimated to be 7, 000 years old, in the moun tainous regions south of Limo ges depict cattle of identical color and similar horns to the modern Limousin. French ge neticists thus infer that the breed is of markedly different origin thap the Charolais which originated in the Jura moun tains of the Swiss Alps and thereby somewhat related to the Brown Swiss and Simmen tal breeds. The Limousin is distinguish ed by a rich, red-gold color ov er the back, shading to a light buckskin or tan under the bel ly and around the legs and muz tie. In size they are slightly smaller than the French Charo lais, but average heavier and larger than the British breeds. Conformation-wise they have much the same length of loin Arthritis Sufferers: .WAKE (IP WITHOUT Ml THAT STIFFNESS! As a finished slaughter ani mal they are, however, said to have another outstanding qual ity. Throughout France the Limousin is noted for its abil ity to marble. So much so that yearling slaughter steers of 1,000 • 1,100 lb. frequently bring 10c per lb. live-weight more than any other breed. And they are said to do this on a rela tively low energy, high rough age finishing ration that pro duces very little carcass fat cover, according to French meat experts. Another claim for the Limou sin is remarkable yield and high carcass cutout. French breeders say the heavy mus cling and relatively fine bone structure are contributors. The bone, reportedly, has greater density and is ample strong. French butchers bone out the entire carcass, selling bone less cuts, and, therefore, ,!ke these features. Portion control and boneless cut processing al so is gaining ground in the United States. Accordingly, in France, the Limousin probably is the on ly breed that is regularly calved outside during winter months. The breed’s hardiness and abil ity to forage under adverse conditions, therefore), are cited as additional advantages. This “rusticity,” as the French call it, seems also to produce outstanding mothering and milking ability. Limousin Herd Book figures give a breed av erage of calves weaned of better than 90% for all cows, pasture bred. The growth rate of the Lim ousin and its crosses is appar ently somewhat less than that of the Charolais or Simmental but considerably above that of the traditional British beef breed;. No data are available on milk production since cows of the breed normally are hot milked in France. Probably it is less than for the Simmental but whether it is above that of the British beef breeds is not known. In its native land, the Lim ousin has an excellent reputa tion for ability to fatten in Cathey's Creek News Reported By • Mrs. Ken Riley CATHEY’S CREEK — Our section again is under the grip of a cold spell. The Limousin will be as a terminal cross in three and four breed (tossing systems where moderately high growth rate is desired. It may also fit in well in rotational breeding plans. Its ultimate usefulness in the United States will prob ably depend upon the extent to which it and its crosses com bine superior growth rate and ability to produce carcasses of types in demand.
