S. finest up coming vaulters. From a private school in Blue Ridge, Virginia his vault of IS’ 1 1/4” rank ed him as the 17th best vault er in high school. He won ail his major meets including the Florida Relays and the Atlanta Classic. However, a lack of competition and ex posure may have cost him an invitation to the Golden West. Though many high school vaulters ranked ahead of Har rison, he was sought after heavily because of his fine technique. Many college coach es ranked him as one of the best. His technique has already brought him a personal best of 15’ 6” in an indoor meet in Knoxville, Tennessee. This performance is one foot high er than any vanlter in North Carolina thus far. His goal is set at 16’ 0” indoors, with a goal of 16’ 6” outdoors. Har rison’s biggest problem is changing, over from his 15’ pole to his 16’ pole. He made the change last week and is expected to have trouble for another two or three weeks. It is only a matter of time before he masters his tech nique and reaches his goal of becoming one of the U. S. fin est valuters. The eight Scouts participat ing were: Frank Cordell, Den nis Culin, BtrUa Echols, David' Grinestaff, Andy Kirk. Kevin Norris, Charles Patrick and Jon Winchester They were accompanied by Assistant Scoutmaster John Sanderson and Tom Bindrim. The group left the Davidson River Fish Hatchery about 2:30 p.ra. Saturday and hiked to But ter Gap where they pitched camp. Due to the low tempera tures and high winds the camp ers retired early. Two tentse were pitched in Butter Gap which servod as a funnel for the unexpected wind and these men complained that the noise of the wind whistling through their tents made sleep ing difficult until they got used to it. Most of the campers were well prepared for cold weather. Two complained that despite two pairs of wool socks, their feet got a little chilly. Torn Bindrkn became a little impatient with the weather as he built his fire for the fifth time. On the first four tries he just had a good fclaae going when « sudden gust of wind wuld blow it out. The Troop returned to the Fidh Hatchery at 2:00 p.m. Sun day much refreshed by their outdoor experience.
