Sylva Webster Tuesday night The win was Rosman’s eighteenth triumph in 21 games and advances them in the play Women’s Invitational Cage Tourney Set At The College Pisgah Edges Brevard 64-59 r In District 8 Hoop Tourney The basketball season end ed abruptly for the Brevard Blue Devils Tuesday night when they dropped a close 64-59 decision to the Pisgah Bears in the first round of District 8 AAA basketball playoffs at Canton.' The homestanding Bears used tremendous rebounding to gfab an early lead and hold it throughout the contest. In all, Pisgah hauled • down 61- re bounds, indicating that the Blue Devils were getting only one shot at the basket most of the night. Pisgah led 14-10 at the end of the first period, and 33-28 at halftime. The Bears pulled ahead a little further at the end of the third period, 5342, but they found themselves in deep trouble early in the final quarter when they lost start ing guards Russ Conley and Randy Gibson when they fouled out. The surging Blue Devils closed the gap, but couldn’t quite catch the Bears before the final gun gave Pisgah the close 64-59 vic tory. Denny Griffin, Mike Morris and Darius Holtzclaw were all in double figures for the Blue Devils with 20, 13 and 10 points respectively. Conley led Pisgah’s attack with 17 points, while David Par ham added 11 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to greatly aid Pisgah’s winning effort. Three Boys To Compete In Elks Free Throw Contest At Shelby Three Brevard youngsters will travel to Shelby this Sat urday, February 26, to par ticipate in the Elks District basketball free throw contest. The three, Todd Norris, Gregg Frisbee and Marty Blackwell, will be representing the local Elks Lodge in the Dis trict competition and will be competing against other young sters in their same age groups from all over this Elks district, which includes all those from Gastonia west. American Thread had three revar 4 Blue Devils Qualify For State Tourney Brevard High’s great wrest ling team closed out their area wrestling season with a brilliant undefeated record Tuesday night when they oat scored 18 other teams to win the Western District Section al wrestling tournament at Tuscola. The finals had originally been scheduled for last Saturday night, but bad weather and hazardous driving conditions forced postponement until Tues day. In addition, Brevard’s Mitch Burr again pinned all of his opposition in the tour nament and was voted the outstanding wrestler of the tournament. All first and second place finishers in the sectional quali fied for the big State Wrestling Tournament that will be held this Friday and Saturday} Feb ruary 25 and 26 at Winston Salem. This means that Brevard will have four wrestlers par ticipating in the State event, •and they are Benny Brown, Ron Odom, Jimmy Hill and Mitch Burr. In claiming their sectional victory, the Blue Devils com piled 79% points. Brevard had four wrestlers in Tuesday night’s finals, after having nine to qualify for the semifinals Tuesday afternoon. In the 129 pound class, Ron Odom lost a close 4-2 decision to Tuscola’s Reese Dippy, while Jimmy Hill lost a 3-0 decision to Mills of Spruce Pine in an other close one in the 158 pound class. (Times Staff Photo) Larry Burdi Is Voted "Grach Of The Year" In WGCC Larry Burch, in his first year as head basketball men tor of Brevard College, was recently voted “Coach of the Year” in the Western Junior College Conference. Burch, who succeeded L. W- “Chick” Martin, posted a regular sea son mark of 19 wins and 6 loses. Brevard, which had finished the previous year as cellar - dwellers in tee con ference, finished a strong third tliis year. Outside tee conference the team manag ed a 10-1 mark, with only loss coming in overtime. In all, the Tornadoes were involved in five overtime games, win ning two. Termed u a highly aggres sive and disciplinarian type individual, Burch m pleas ed with his nomination. “It truly is an honor, as I be lieve it reflect* on the fine effort the team has given me this year. They have been loyal and dedicated, and shown a love for the gaaae. He received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Western Carolina University and re turned to Brevard in 1968 as assistant basketball and head baseball coach. In 1969 and 1978 he coached his soccer teams to two consecutive reg ional and sectional titles while finishing sixth and seventh nationally in the respective years. As assistant golf coach in 1971, he aided in leading the team to a regional title and seventh place in the na tional golf tournament He presently serves as head golf coach.
