Miss Spohn is employed by Consumer Credit Company in Ashe ville. Airman Banther is stationed at Dover Air Force Base at Dover, Delaware. The wedding is planned for May 13th. He was a member of the Transylvania County Commissioners for several years. He is a member of Mt. Moriah Cherryfield Baptist Church. He and his wife, Victoria Moore Allison, who passed away in 1957, had six daugh ters: Mrs. Marie Whitmire, Mrs. Helen Whimire, Mrs. Grace Lee, of Brevard, Mrs. Edna Reid, of Horse Shoe, Mrs. Blanche Bakkee, of Se verna Park, Maryland, and Mrs. Millie Cunningham, of Fletcher, and one son: Ger eld Allison, of Brevard. There are 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His second wife, Mrs. Lena Tuester Jenkins, of Canton, died in 1970. Al o, he has 3 stepsons; Jack Jenkins, of Canton, R. B. Miss Merrill was represent ing Brevard Senior High School and competed against the top Distributive Educa tion Students from twenty two high schools. Eligibility requirements for this contest included at least an 85 average overall average on all high school courses, at tendance, character, vocation al objectives, work perfor mance on the job, extracurric ular activities, appearance, and a personal interview. Data on each of the contest ants was sent to a panel of district judges. The data was then reviewed by the panel and points were awarded for each of the categories. Later each of the contestants were given a personal interview and the three top students were selected. These three top students won the privilege of representing their chapter of DECA at the State Leader ship Conference which will be held in Raleigh on March 17th and 18th. In addition to her school activities, Becky is receiving her on-the-job training at Winn-Dixie under the super vision of Charles Kelley. Glen Cannon Bridge Winners Are Announced Mrs. Paul Schlunz and Mrs. Randall Lankford were in charge of arrangements for the Glen Cannon bridge which was held in the Club lounge on Wednesday, Feb ruary 16th. Mrs. William Huters, Chair man of the monthly bridge games, has announced the following prise winners: high score, Mrs. H. A. Breedlove; second prim, Mrs. G. R. Dix on; low score. Mrs. Dewey Nix: and floating prise, Mrs. William Huffman. The next bridge event will be held at the Club on Wed nesday, March 15th, with Mrs. Verne Hill, Mrs. W. A. Parry and Miss Mary Scott rerving as hostesses. Music Lovers Club Will Meet Monday The February meeting of the Brevard Music Lovers Club will meet on Monday evening, February 28th, in the studio of Mrs. Louise Mil ler in the Dunham Fine Arts Building at Brevard College. Mrs. Carolyn Cox, program leader, will present a pro gram on piano music of the Romantic era. Mrs. Robert Davis and Mrs. Henry McDonald, pianists will proform works of Schu mann Grieg and Saint Saena. Mrs. McDonald and Mrs. Miller will be co-hostesses. All members are urged to atend. A nuclear magnet resonance spectrometer (NMR) has been donated to North Carolina A k T State University by Esso Re search and Engineering Com pany. BECKY MERRILL I Today's Club Holds Meeting The Today’s Extension Homemaker’s Club met on February 10th in the home of Mrs. Charles Spanbauer with 14 members present. After delicious refresh ments. the meeting was call ed to order by the President, Mrs. Pat Prince. Mrs. Bill Searcy gave an inspirational devotional on prayer, faith, and trust. Miss Jean Childers present ed an interesting program on the treatment of windows. She quoted the statement "Where there’s a wihdttw, there is a Way”, and showed curtains of different styles and fabrics. Mrs. Prince presided over the business session of the meeting. She reminded the members that all member ship dues were to be turned in during the month of Febru ary, however since a few of the members had not payed, she asked that the remainder of the money be taken from the club treasurer to be re imbursed at a later time. It was also reported that the County Council had sug gested that all clubs have a combined meeting during the month of June because of usual low attendance during the summer months. Each member would bring a sand wich and the hostess for the month of June would furnish drinks and dessert fof her particular club. The Club also voted to give $1.00 to go to Countv Committee Chairmen for postage. Membership cards and new year books were given to the members. A workshop, on Ceramics was planned to meet with Mrs. Mary Mills. The meeting adjourned with members reciting the Club Collect. Calvary Holds Coronation Service In an impressive candle light ceremony Sunday eve ning, February 13th, at the Calvary Baptist church, a Coronation Service was held for girls participating in the Studiact Program of the Ac ateens Organization. Five girls were crowned Queens. They were: Kelly Harrison, Pamela Felty, Gayla Whitlock, Barbara Parker, and Penny Hall. Their next step will be Queen with Scepter. The Acteens’ Director is Mrs. Everett Hipp; tile lead ers are Mrs. Charles Free l Mrs. Jim Whitlock. Let Us Do Your Job Printing Lutherans Open Lenten Season, Schedule Of Services Is Given Intense preparation has been in the making for the approach ing Lenten season, which began on Ash Wednesday, February 16th, by members of the Luth eran Church of the Good Shep herd, comer of North Broad Street and Fisher Road, accord ing to announcement made by the Rev. J. Lewis Thornburg, D.D., the vice-pastor of the con gregation. The southwestern district of the North Carolina Lutheran Synod met at Ascensions Luth eran Church, Shelby, and was attended by Mr. and Mrs. Wen dell Brown, Mr. and Mrs. 0. A. Hofmann, Lewis Rasmussen, George Wilson and Dr. and Mrs. Thornburg, and serious at tention was given to Evangel ism, Stewardship, Social Minis try, Christian Education, and the Key 73 program. This was followed by a two-day meeting of the Carolinas Evangelism Conference at St. Mark’s Luth eran Church, Charlotte, where consideration was given to the Content, The Climate, and the Channels Of Communicating The Gospel. This conference was attended by Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Hofmann and Dr. and Mrs. Thornburg. Last Sunday the vice-pastor challenged the membership to present “A United Front” as this entered into the great de votional season of the Church Year, known as Lent. His topic for Ash Wednesday will be “Choosing The Best”, and each Sunday morning until the close of the period the pastor’s mes sages will deal with God’s con cern for the sinner. This year an exchange of pastors of neigh boring Lutheran Churches will take place at the special ser vice each Sunday evening, be ginning at 6:45 when the gen eral theme will be, “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”. The Rev. Edward Long, Nativity, Arden, will deliver the message on Sunday February 20th, on the subject, “What a Friend, Who Teaches Us”. The following Sunday, Febru ary 27th, the Rev. John Hawn, of St. Mark’s, Asheville will speak on the topics “What a Friend, Who Loves Us”. The pastor and members of Good Shepherd extend a. very cordial welcome to all who may wish to fellowship with them during this holy season of the Church Year.
