37 E. Main Street Myers Florist Is Members Of Florafax, --—TBT Know Your Transylvania Merchants Series Area's Gold Medal Florist Mrs. Myers And Mrs. Visitors to The Transylvania Times often remark on the beautiful flower display that do so much to brighten the office. What they’re complimenting is a happy Brevard tradition of displaying flower arranging skill in the newspaper office, begun by Waters Florist several years ago and continued by their successor, Myers Florists. Now co-owned by Mrs. Willow Faye My ers and Mrs. Blanche Ramsey, Myers Florist be gan a year ago when the two ladies bought the Waters Florist at 37 East Main. The ladies were in the florist business at the time, operating the Brevard Florist at 60 West Main St., but made the change of name when the business was moved Myers Florist is now the area’s only Gold Medal Florist, an exclusive designation by the Gold Medal Association which is given only to florists who meet very high standards of excellence in flower arrangement and modern shop facilities. It is also a member of Flora fax, a corporative of florists which wires flow ers all over the world. Continuing what had become something of a business trademark by Waters Florist, My ers is well known for its special show window decorations. These are changed every month and on special occasions with a theme for each decoration. For example, this month’s theme is a June Wedding with a beautifully - gowned mannequin bride and a display of June flowers and wedding arrangements. It is particularly appropriate, for wedding arrangements are a specialty of the shop. The shop is operated by Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Ramsey with occasional help from Mrs. Myers daughter, Debbie Wood. Occasional help with the shop cleaning is also provided; Co-Owners By - Cal Carpenter FAMOUS SHOW WINDOW Sears PUMP SALE SAVE NOW ON ALL TYPES AND ALL SIZES,..DEEP WELL AND SHALLOW WELL...JET PUMPS AND SUBMER SIBLES ... MRS- MYERS “There were two things I’d always thought I’d like to do,” says Mrs. Myers. “One was to operate a florist shop and the other was to be a beautician.’” That she was able to realize the florist alternative seems to be a fortuitous combination of circumstances. “Mrs. Ramsey and I attend the same church,” she begins, “and we became ac quainted. “I’d been doing office work and, of course, still had my florist ambition .... “Mrs. Ramsey began working at the Mc Crary Flower Shop — it used to be at the cor ner of Caldwell and U. S. Highway 64- She started attending the McFarland School of Floristry in Raleigh. One day she called me and said there was an opportunity to buy the McCrary Florist business, would I be interest ed in going inlo it with her? “It was just what I was looking for, so I said yes. I enrolled in the florist school too, and we were graduated together. “Mrs. Ramsey and I worked at McCrary’s for a few months; then, when the new high way construction forced the building to be torn down, we moved to 60 West Main as the/ Brevard Florist. We operated there for about four years, then moved to the present loca tion a year ago.” MRS. RAMSEY “I'd worked at Olin,” says Mrs. Ramsey, and was home housekeeping when I went into McCrary’s florist and talked with Mrs. Mc Crary. I’d always loved flowers and had work ed with them outdoors — I thought I’d like florist work “Mrs. McCrary offered me a job in the shop and recommended I go to the florist school. I had enrolled there when I found out the business was for sale. I called Mrs. Myers and, well, here we are . . . .” TRANSYLVANIA NATIVE Mrs. Myers is a native of Transylvania county, born in the Dunn’s Rock community. She attended Brevard public schools.
