Transylvanians Can Now Earn Presidential Sport Awards Adult 18 or older in Tran sylvania County can now earn Presidential Sports Awards which is similiar to the Presi dent’s Physical Fitness Award for youth. The award can be earned in 31 different sports. Standards have been established which are designed to assure regulari ty of participation and an in vestment of time and effort conducive to physical fitness for those eighteen and over. Some of the 31 sports are: Archery, Badminton, Bowling, Golf, Handball, Jogging, Ski ing, Softball, Tennis and Vol leyball. An example of the standards follows for golf: (1) Play a minimum of 30 rounds of golf (18 holes) (2) No more than one 18-hole round a day may be credited to total • -i (3) No motorized carts may be used. In each sport, require ments must be fulfilled within a period of four months. For forms and information on requirements of the other 30 sports call the recreation department at 883-2050. WCCA Board To Meet Monday The Board of Directors of Western Carolina Community Action, Inc., will meet on Mon day, February 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Etowah Grange Hall. Agenda will include presenta tion of program and budget for 1973-74, dimensions of poverty in Transylvania and Henderson Counties, evaluation of program progress. The public is invited to at tend. Barton Rites Held Tuesday James Monroe Barton, 63, of the Middle River Community, died last Saturday morning in i a Henderson County hospital after a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of Transylvania County and a vet eral of World War II. He was employed for 35 years as a welder with the Sid Barnett Machine Shop before retire ment. Mr. Barton was a mem ber of the Monroe Wilson Post of the American Legion and the VFW post. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Julia McCrary Barton; two daughters, Mrs. Brenda Orr of Penrose and Miss Judy Barton of the home: a son, James Lar ry Barton pf Henderson; his mother, Mrs. Nellie Allison Barton of Pisgah Forest; three sisters, Mrs. Julia King of Greenville, S. C., Mrs. Exie Houck of Marion and Mrs. Max ine Cunningham of Henderson ville; a brother, Bill Barton of Brevard: and two grandchil dren. Services were held at Tues day in Little River Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Jesse Bailey and T. G. Proctor officiated. Burial was in Pisgah Gardens. Nep hews will be pallbearers. The family received friends ai Moore Funeral Home Mon day, where the body remained until placed in the church one hour prior to services.
