The 1^-af Gall Disease Of
Azaleas, Camellia And
Rhododendron
Azalea, camellia and rhodo
dendron leaf gall is a common
and widespread fungus disease
in North Carolina in the ear
ly spring. Leaf gall is alarming
to the grower, but actual dam
age to the plant is usually
slight. However, the disease is
more serious under humid
shady conditions and without
any control infected leaves may
become so numerous that the
plants are damaged or dis
figured.
On azalea the leaf gall fun
gus wart-like thick, fleshy curl
ed areas on the new leaves. The
galls are light green and as
the galls enlarge, the surface
becomes powdery white. On
camellia, especially sasanquas,
the entire leaf or shoot with
several leaves becomes thick,
fleshy and leathery. These
leaves are light green to white
or occasionally pink. As the
galled leaf enlarges, the lower
leaf surface ruptures ruptures
to expos ethe powdery white
fungus spore masses. On rho
dodendron entire new shoots
and flowers, especially the
flower petals of evergreen spe
cies, may be affected.
In the home garden where
the number of plants is small,
leaf gall can be controlled by
hand picking and destroying the
galls as soon as they appear.
