The team finished the season M. Dick Mathews’ Pirates, the early season leaders, finished second at 7-5, and Earl John sons’ Red Sox evened their sea son ending record at 6-6, win* ning their last game. G. F. Rice’s Braves playing winning ball after losing their first eight games finished fourth at 2-10. The league serves as an in structional league for boys six to eight just learning to play baseball and was sponsored by the Optimist Club and the Rec reation Department. Orioles Have Top Play-Off ; Spot In Division 11, Minors : Jack Goldsmith’s Orioles 5 have the top play-off spot in ) division II Minor League as the play-offs started this week. Their regular season record 1 was 10-2. Gerald Edwards' Pirates are ' in second after an 8-3 record, and John Dills’ A’s are seeded third, finishing 3-9. Tom Wilson’s Royals won two of their final four to end the season 2-9 and the fourth seeding. Play-offs for this division be gan Wednesday at 5:00 at E. L. Lynn field. ) July 24th A River Derby Is Slated i For Festival Of The Arts The Transylvania County Department of Recreation will sponsor a River Derby (Inner tube Race) on the Davidson River on Tuesday, July 24tb, as part of the activities of Bre vard’s week-long Festival of the Arts. All boys and girls 12 and ov er, an addults, are eligible for the event. There will be three divisions; 12-15, 16-18, and 19 and over in each sex. All contestants must be at the starting point, the English Chapel, by 1:45 to receive pre race instructions. There will be some innertubes furnished on a first-come bases; but it is recommended that each con testant bring his own. The event will be held rain or shine and ribbons will be awarded winners in each di vision at the finish line — the Job Corps Bridge. Summer Fitness Program For Boys Offered Here Adult Swimming Lessons Being Taught Locally Adult swimming lessons have begun this week at Franklin Park Pool. There ai« two classes daily with one being taught at 9:00 a. m. and the other at 6:00 p. m. Classes are ttught Monday through Friday. The only charge is the daily users fee for the pool which is 50c daily for adults. This does however, entitle the person to use the pool during regular swimming pool hours at.no extra charge. The staff at the pool is in charge of instruction. Summer Fitness Program Now Offered, Rosmam A summer sports fitnes8 pro gram is being offered at Ros man again this summer by the Recreation Department under the supervision of Coach Jimmy Howell. Planned activities include a football clinic, basketball clin ic, a second basketball clinic for girls, a summer basketball league and tournaments in table tennis, horseshoes, chess and checkers. A free activity period will be held every day from 3:30 - 6:00 when an individual can partake in any activity of his choice. Emphasis will be put on developing the mental as well as the physical being. Other activities in the pro gram under Coach Howell who will be assisted by Ricky Pangle A summer fitness program, sponsored by the Recreation Department and supervised by Ed Emory, is currently being conducted daily at Brevard High School. Supervised as well as free ac tivities comprise the program. Free activities of table tennis, horse shoes, volleyball, basket ball, weights, track and wrestl ing are from 2:00 until 7:00 daily. Fundamental weight training and sports are taught for boys ages 12-15 from 4:00 - 6:00 Mon day, Tuesday and Friday. Advanced weight training and sports for boys 15-18 are taught from 7:00 - 9:00 Mon day, Wednesday and Friday. A special basketball and foot ball clinic for boys 8-14 will be given with coaches from Clem son University conducting the three-night clinic.
