Guest Column Wallace And Alabama \ Set Example Of Decency (Continued from Page Two) Hubert Humphrey got respect when he vis ited Alabama in 1968 even if he didn’t get many votes in Alabama in that year’s presi dential election. 1 The Watergate investigation has uncov ered the bitter intolerance harbored by the White House toward Americans who have dared to speak or work against policies pursued by President Nixon. The Nixon “enemies list” has been prominent in the news. Many of those who “made it” did so because of their opposition to the Nixon polfcy in Vietnam. Watergate has brought forth evidence of subjection of Nixon op ponents to tax investigations by Internal Revenue Service. The Nixon administra tion hounded the POWs who had spoken out against the Vietnam war. One POW who held antiwar views was driven to suicide by his fear of prosecution on charges of treason. 1 I ’’VWIS The constitutional right of free speech surely is fundamental to the American po litical system. It means freedom to criticize policies and practices of government And the President of the United States cannot be immune to criticism if we really intend to make democracy work. Government is never justified in using its power to coerce citizens to take particular political post tions, nor in silencing criticism of how gov ernment conducts the people’s business. Ad citienzs in a country that strives to be truly democratic including of course the political leaders, have a moral duty to listen to. with respect, all variations of opinion, from right to left on the political spectrum. And to defend the rights of po litical opposition. It was ,«srogapt disdain of these rights that produced Watergate. The Kennedy visit to Alabama is less than a harbinger of 1976 politics. Its sig nifiance rather lies in'the example of po litical decency set bv Governor Wallace and the people of Alabama. The respect accorded Senator Kennedy by citizens who surely don’t share most of his views is worthy of emulation by the men who run the Nixon administration and by all other Americans. iVft'IHM Letters T° Editor (Continued from Face Two) out question the bidding of those left in charge. ' 4|P1 Mr. King as stage manager was and is directly in charge of the production once it is on the boards. It is his responsibility to tell Mr. McCrae and the conductor when the stage is ready, cast is in place, light cues set, etc., etc. i While Keith King is a young man, he has had a lot of experience in this job. But this was his first show with a new company, new directors, young cast, and the added dif ficulty of working without the director and conductor there. The pressure on him was immense. Thankfully our performance on Saturday pulled together because of the enthusiasm of our kids and of course the hard work and talent of the whole company. I sincerely hope that you and Bob Brown will forgive any discourtesy which may have occurred. I can ascribe it only to the fact that the pressure and duress of putting on the show under very difficult circumstances put everyone on edge. Mr. McCrae, Mr. King, and I will certainly talk to Mr. Brown about this at the earliest opportunity. In the meantime, let me tell you and all the other members of the media that the very life of our institution depends greatly on your understanding, help, and generosity. We know this and value it. That “welcome mat” will never be jerked while my associ ates and I have any responsibilities with the Center.
