Hendersonville's
Fourth Quarter
Rally Fails
The Brevard Blue Devils
built up a substantial 24-7
margin and then gamely with
stood a furious Hendersonville
surge in the final period to de
feat the Bearcats 24-21 before a
sellout crowd of some 6,000 bi
partisan fans here last Friday
night
The win was Brevard’s sec
ond straight of the year after
three losses, their fourth in a
row over arch-rival Henderson
ville, and their second straight
win over the Bearcats that was
decided by the margin of a field
goal.
Last year, Stan Hudson boot
ed a first quarter field goal that
proved to be all the Blue Devils
needed to down the Bearcats
3-0, and last Friday night Gary
Wynn kicked one from 19 yards
out in the second period that
was to prove the difference this
year, although no one knew it
at the time.
Brevard’s alert secondary and
hard-rushing defensive line ap
plied the pressure in the
closing minutes that helped
stave off the fired up Bearcats
and preserve the victory for the
Blue Devils.
What had appeared to be a
virtual runaway suddenly be
came a. titan tic struggle in the
fourth period when Henderson
ville scored two touchdowns in a
little over three minutes to nar
row the margin from 24-7 to
24-21,
Hendersonville’s first fourth
quarter score came on a 46
yard scoring aerial from Randy
Mahaffey to Chris Ferguson,
coming with 8:22 left in the
game. The pass was completed
on third down and 14, and
simply caught Brevard’s secon
dary napping.
The Bearcats scored again
5:55 remaining when Dale Grif
fin’s intended pitch-out went
awry at the Brevard 21 and was
chased down and finally recov
ered by Hendersonville’s John
Powers at the Brevard three
yard line.

The opportunistic Blue Devils
had built up their advantage
early with two first quarter
touchdowns. The first came on
a two yard run by Danny Walk
er that had been set up by a
fumble recovery of Mark Hoop
er’s punt at the Hendersonville
two yard line. It was a bone
jarring tackle by Jim Phillips
that knocked the ball loose
from Gary Rivers that set up
the Blue Devil score.
After Gary Wynn booted the
extra point, he kicked off deep
to the Bearcats, pinning them
at their three yard line. Several
plays later, Bobby Arnett pick

back to the Bearcat 35 to set
up Brevard’s second score.
Dale Griffin passed beautiful

The Brevard High Freshmen
roared back with a vengeance
last Thursday after suffering
losses in their first three games
to hand the Enka Freshmen a
decisive 14-0 licking at Brevard
High Stadium.
The falling rain ‘ failed to
dampen the spirits of the young
Blue Devils as they scored
quickly on the second play from
scrimmage and then added an
other touchdown in the fourth
period to win going away.
The ninth graders were also
in scoring position at Enka’s
five when the first half ended,
and again on the three when
the final horn sounded, or the
score could have been higher.
Starting at their own 23, Bre
vard struck quickly when David
Lee Moss ripped around right
end for 72 yards to Enka’s five,
and then swept left end for the
final five on the next play. He
then ran the two point conver
sion to put the locals ahead 8-0.
Moss also scored Brevard’s
other touchdown in the fourth
quarter from two yards out, and

Rosman Halts Hayesville 22-6
Travels To Andrews Friday
The Rosman Tigers recorded
their second win of the season
and their first in Smoky Moun
tain Class A Conference compe
tition last Friday when they
defeated Hayesville there by a
22-6 margin.
Statistically, Hayesille had a
little the better of it, racking
up 15 first downs to Rosman’s
11, and totaling 291 yards rush
ing and passing to Rosman’s
196. But when it counted, the
Tigers were tough in nothing
their second win of the year.
After a scoreless first quar
ter, Rosman got on the board in
the second period when Carl
Galloway went over from five
yards out, and then stretched
the margin to 8-0 when Emmer
soi> O’Shields ran over for the
two point conversion.
In the third period, Tony
Stewart zipped the final ten
yards -to score for the Tigers,
and the two pointer made the
scoreboard read 16-0, Rosman.
Playing catch-up football,
Hayesville had to take to the
air, (they completed 17 of 32
passes for the night) but Ricky
Pangle alertly picked off Mike
ed strong praise op his entire
team after the game, stating
that both the offense and de
fense played superlative foot
ball.
Coach McLellan also stated
that he was real proud of the
fan reaction when the teams
came up the field after Hender
sonville’s third touchdown had
narrowed the score to 24-21.
“The Brevard fans stood up in
unison and cheered the Blue
Devils as they came back up
the field after Hendersonville’s
score, and I know the team ap
preciated that showing pf con
fidence and the backing of their
fans at that crucial time. I want
the fans to know that we great
ly appreciate support like that,”
Coach McLellan stated.
The Blue Devils will be at
home again this Friday night
to undefeated East Henderson
in a game that both teams must
win if they are to ?tay alive in
Parkway Division competition.
It will be “parent’s night”,
with the parents of the Blue
Devils being honored during
Hooper’s pass and streaked 15
yards for the score that stretch
ed Rosman’s margin to 22-0.
Hooper did put Hayesville on
the board in the final frame
when he connected with Scott
Bridgeford for 25 yards and the
lone Hayesville score of the
night, making the final score
Rosman 22, Hayesville 6.
The Tigers will face another
acid road test this Friday night
when they travel to Andrews to
take on the Wildcats in another
Smoky Mountain Conference
clash.
“Andrews is always tough!”
remarked Rosman Coach Lee
Powell, “And they’ll be espe
cially rough coming off their
13-0 loss to Cherokee last Fri
day. “We’ll have to play better
than we did against Hayesville
to beat them, but I feel like
our boys can do it if they come
up with their best effort,”
Coach Powell concluded.
Kickoff time at Andrews has
T
been set for 8:00 p.m.
