Four Arrested
Youthful Larceny Ring Broken
By City, County Investigators
A total of 34 city and coun
ty cases of breaking and en
tering and larceny are con
sidered cleared by the arrest
of four Transylvania County
youths who allegedly made up
a larceny ring that has been
active in the county for the
last several months.
y' T'he joint city-county investi
gation began June 1st, resulted
to the arrests oH August 25th,
and concluded October 5th.
Arrested on charges of
breaking and entering and
~ larceny, were Joe Cliborae
Reynolds, 16, and Stephen
Lee Whitmire, also 16, of
Brevard. Also arrested were
two juveniles who were
charged with larceny. All four
youngsters are now free on
bond.
Many of the large number of
items reported stolen in 23 city
larceny casejj, and nine county
larceny and two breaking and
entering cafes, have been re
cover^ and witt.be returned to
the owners fitter the trials.
Some Items |r$ported stolen,
however, are still missing.

Much Action Taken
Commissioners Considering
Building Juvenile Shelter
The Transylvania County
Commissioners heard a pro
posal at their Monday night
meeting for the county to
construct a juvenile shelter
to house children who have
no place to go because of
family problems or court ac
tion.
The proposal was made by
Donald Morrison, the county’s
lew Social Services Director, on
lehalf of his department and a
committee which has been in
restigating a local juvenile
ihelter for the county for sev
iral months.
Mr. Morrison stated that
the Social Services Depart
ment currently has 15 chil
dren who would be eligible
to be placed in this facility
and that If they were there,
the county would receive $100
per month per child, which
should cover the expenses in
volved in the home’s opera
tion.

Director Appointed Oct. 1st
Donald L. Morrison has join
ed the Social Services Board of
Transylvania County as Director
of Social Services. The appoint
ment was effective October 1st.
Mr. MorriS'on replaces Mrs.
Edith Jenkins who has accepted
a position with the Regional 4-C
Office.
Mr. Morrison conies to Bre
vard from Forsyth Countv,
where he had responsibility for
that county’s Family and Chil
dren’s Services. He has also
been the coordinator of For
syth’s activities in the Crisis
Control Center, the Experiment
in Self-Reliance, and the C°n_
centrated Program for Ex
Offenders.
He holds degrees from Wake
Forest University (B.A.) and
the University of North Caro
lina (M.S.W). He has also at
tended Belleville Junior Col
lege, Belleville, Illinois, and
the University of Alaska at
Fairbanks. In his university

vice to the community.
Mayor Campbell is complet
ing his first term as Mayor of
Brevard.
He is also the Chairman of
Region B.
Mr. Moffitt has served for
two terms as an Alderman in
Brevard.
He is the owner and operator

Mr. Morrison brings a broad
experience in many kinds of
social work to Transylvania
County. He has spent several
years with the U. S. Army in
both Alaska and Vietnam. In
Alaska he worked with Army
psychiatrists in testing and
counseling work. In Vietnam he
specialized in moral problems
and their solutions. For this
work he received the Commen
dation Medal from the Secre
tary of the Army.
Mr. Morrison, his wife and
four children will be living on
the Greenville Highway after
November 1st. Mrs. Morrison is
a Registered Nurse who has ac
cepted a job at the Transylvania
Community Hospital and will
start her duties there as soon
as the famly is settled.
Murder Cases
To Highlight
Docket For
First Session
The trial of three men in
connection with the slaying
of Mr. and Mrs. Bill D. Hire
at Balsam Grove on Septem
ber 12th will highlight the Oc
tober Criminal term of Su
perior court nert week.
Charged with murder are
Gary McCall, Lawrence Mc
Call and Lloyd McCall- w*,°
have been held in the local
jail without the benefit of
bond. All three men face two
counts of murder.
While the Criminal docket
opens on Monday, the murder
trials will not begin until
Wednesday, according to the
present schedule of trial of
cases, f irs. Marian McMahon,
Clerk of Superior court, an
nounces.
The double slaying is re
ported to have followed a dis
pute over property access.
Other Cases
Frank E. Fenson is charged
with non-support, and his
case is slated for trial on Mon
day.
William V. Howell faces a
charge of driving with license
revoked.
Leroy McCall will b,e tried
on a breaking and entering
charge.
Granville B. Liles faces a
selling marijuana charge.
Bennie IS1. Moore will be
tried for kidnapping.
Public drunkenness is the
charge against Walter G.
Hooper, Jr., who also faces a
driving under the influence
charge.

Kickoff Set
For 7:30 Friday
Brevard High Athletic Di
rector Bobby McLellan an
nounced Wednesday that the
kickoff time for this Friday
night's football game between
Brevard and Pisgah at Can
ton will be at 7:30 p.m.
It had originally been
stated that the game would
get underway at 8:00 p.m.,
but the correct kickoff time
will be 7:30 p.m.

for Mayor in the November
election.
This election, on November
6th, is non partisan, so there
will be no primary. Candidates
will run as individuals, not
necessarily as partisan repre
sentatives.
In an interview last week,
Mr. Blackwell said he would
run on a theme of “Youthful
Leadership.’
“The city of Brevard la
progressing rapidly,” he says.
