II Issues Statement mg His Re-Election Mayor Charles Campbell, seeking his second term in of fice as Mayor of Brevard, issues the following statement this week concerning his candidacy: “It has been my pleasure to serve the citizens of Brevard this post term as Mayor. This was my first venture into the political arena, which I have enjoyed the good with the bad. Regardless of the freeze on Federal Grants of which we had planned improvements of the services to the citisens, we have accomplished a great deal toward the future of our community. “We have upgraded our po lice department in both per sonnel and equipment, making it one of the best equipped for a city of this size in North Caro lina. In addition to this, the po lice department has been put on a five-day work schedule during the past year. “The entire city personnel have been covered by a good retirement program during this term. We have purchased new equipment, such as a new garbage truck to be put in op eration soon, a chipper, ac counting machine, and a street sweeper to help upgrade our services and keep our city cleaner. “Due to a large annexation that has taken place, we have installed or still installing addi tional water and sewer lines. Much work has been accomp lished toward new lines to dif Mayor Charles Campbell ferent areas, such as the new hospital, new school locations and to areas that make it possi ble to annex in the future. “We have been able to gain better working relationship with the mrechants of our area, making shopping more convenient for our citizens. have improved zoning and land use ordinances in help ing to upgrade development in our community. “After many months of en deavor, we have been able to get out low rental housing units under - way, which is a much needed program in Brevard. My ex perience as Chairman of Che Regional Commission has en abled me to help our com munity more in the future with planning and made appli cation for grants which we hope will be forthcoming to reduce the load of taxes for our people. I hope that addi tional cooperation will be forthcoming between our city and the county to bring about more efficient operations and curtail duplication work load that is presently taking place. This can be a great saving for both Brevard and Transyl vairig County. “Brevard is on an upward swing and I feel that with the plans that are in the making, at the present time and in the fu ture, 1 would like another term to help shape these plans into a reality. Under a committee headed by Craig Fogleman, the Jaycees are planning the following pro grams; extensive coverage of alcohol abuse and responsible drinking through radio broad casts and newspaper articles; sponsorship of alcohol abuse workshop for the health teach ers in the city and county school system as well as local nurses and other interested per sons; sponsor projects of the Transylvania County “Archway House” (a halfway house for alcoholics); be available to as sist the administrators in what ever capacity they see fit; and obtain and show various film strips covering alcohol abuse to health classes in the local school system. On October 20th Dr. Poe To Speak At Seminar On Aging At Brevard College William D Poe, M ,D„ Di rector of the Marshall Pickens Rehabilitation Institute at the Duke University Medical Cen ter, is coming to Transylvania County at the invitation of St Philip’s Episcopal Church. Council on Aging, to participate in the Seminar on Aging plan ned at Brevard College on Oc tober 20th. Dr. Poe will be a featured speaker at the seminar; his topic will be “The Prevention of Premature Aging”. If his time allows he will be available for discussions with county organizations concerned with the senior citizens of the county. The American Associ ation of Retired Persons, The Transylvania Medical Society, The Transylvania Ministerial Association, The Mental Health Association, The Council of So cial Agencies are among the large group of local organiza tions who will Jointly sponsor Dr. Poe’s speech at Brevard Council.
