Hint* From The County Extension Chairman By . JERRY PURSER Ornamental Plant Diseases PINES — Fusiform rust and Eastern gall rust are now be ginning to produce masses of powdery orange spores on the g*n surface. TCieee orange wind blown spores infect new water and willow oak leaves. Hie fun gus causes brown hair - like spore - producing structures 1/4 toch long on the lower oak-leaf r surf ace. Spores produced on the oak leaves infect young pines during mid-summer. Galls on the limbs 10-12 inches from the trunk cause little damage to the pine tree but produce mil lions of spores to infect oak leaves. Galls on the man trunk -can cause the tree to be stunt ed and bushy, or break off. 'The diseases do little damage ; to oak. These rust diseases are I controlled on pines by: 1) do 1 hot plant infected seedlings, 2) . prune off and burn galls on ' limbs. tUak af TAKNEK’S. ah CO-ED NOW SHOWING AN ESCAPE PROM THE GREAT WHfTE DEATH! PRESENTATION iR FULL COLON A true-life late, unfolded by ' ® LORME i I NEEDLECAST is now occur* ing in Transylvania County. The older needles turn brown and drop off. The disease starts on the lower limbs and moves up the tree. Only the older need les are affected. Hie fungus ov erwinters in the dead needles on the ground. Control is usual ly not necessary as the disease rarely does nignificant damage to pine trees. Much gentic varia tion is susceptibility to needle cast occurs within pine species. Some trees are very susceptible while others of the same species are very resistant. JAPANESE AND CHINESE HOLLIES — continue to die. They typically die section by section until the entire plant is dead. From Clinic samples re ceived over the past several months, 50 - 60% of this dam age is due to nematodes. Nema todes can kill these plants, par ticularly if the plant is under other stress factors such as drought, excess fertilizer, • etc. Another 25% is due to over fertilization. Remember these hollies are not susceptible to Phytophthora root rot but they will drown in very poorly drain ed soil. Spring is a good time to treat hollies and other woody orna mentals to control nematodes. Use Nemagon or Fumazone as soon as the soil temperature 4 inches deep gets above 50 deg. F.
