In College Shopping Center First State Savings, Loan Has Formal Opening Saturday The new First State Sav ings and Loan Association here in the Brevard College Shopping Center will have its Formal Opening on Saturday of this week. Hie hours will be from 10:t0 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a ribbon cut ting at 10:00 a.m., featuring of ficials of the town and county, President James C. Gaither an nounces. Refreshments will be served throughout the day, and favors will be given to persons attend ing. Nine Savings Accounts will be awarded to the persons guessing nearest to the num ber of pennies in the “Money House”, which is now on dis play. According to Bill Slough, City Manager, and Fire Chief Joe Piekeisimer. the pressure on each hydrant will also be tested. The work to clean all 200 hvdrants in the Citv will re quire some nine weeks. Testing and cleaning of the hvdrants is a requirement of the National Board of Fire Underwriters. Sample Ballots Are Carried In Times This Week A fair vote is expected in Transylvania during the off year Primary Elections next 1 i.e! day. Democrats will vote on Pree ballots, a local ballot including State Senator, House ef Renrcseotat'ves, Board cf Education and Sher iff; for .ludhral officers; and for United States Senate. RcnnMieans v/ill vote on two ballots. United States Senate and for Judsc'al of ficers. Sample ballots can be found in the second section of this week’s Times. For the first time in his tory, Transylvanians will use voting machines. They will be in all precincts, and counting out will take only a very short time after the polls are closed. Polls open at 6:30 next Tuesday morning, and they will close at 7:30. Some observers say that the voting machines will cut down on the number of per sons voting, however, offi cials feel that they will in crease voting because of the novelty. Instructional meetings have been held throughout the county, and they will be con tinued until election time. Total registration in Tran sylvania is 11,334. The breakdown is as fol lows: Democrats — 6,735 Republicans — 3,708 American — 56 Independent or no party — 835. Approximately 670 voters are included in the 18 to 20 year old age bracket. Candidates have been busy campaigning during the past few weeks, and interest seems to be primarily in the Board of Education race. Two persons will be nomi nated from the following Democratic candidates: Eu gene Morris, the incumbent; Jerry Cabe, Edward E. Kil lian, Sr., Bill P. Norris and Marius Wells. The winners get: First Place — $100 and trip to State Finals Second Place — $50 Third Place — $25. Competing bands are Bitter sweet, Toy, No Name and Lo cust. Hosting the contest concert and dance will be Dave Cid of WLOS, Asheville. Judging on a point svstcm is based on individual rather than comparative talent. A select panel will judge the music groups competing for the prizes and the opportuni ty to continue to the State fi nals. Judging will be based on a 100-point system in four ma jor categories — musical tal ent, originality, showmanship and audience appeal, all of which are mandatory skills for professional achievement. Returns will begin coming in around 7:30 o’clock, and the station will probabiv stav on the air until complete returns are in. Anderson, Executive Director of WPNF, urges all Transylvanians to tune in next Tuesday night to the station’s School Board Meets May 6, Holiday 7th The Transylvania County Poard of Education will meet at 8:00 p.m. on May 6th in the Board offices located on West Main Street. The agenda will feature a progress report on mathematics instruction in the schools. Routine business items will also be reviewed by the Board, and the public is in vited to attend. Supt. Harrv C. Corbin also announces that Transylvania schools will be closed next Tuesday, since some of the school buildings are used for voting places. Ky - Staff Writer May is Mental Health Month and during this month there is a statewide focus toward a greater awareness of the fa cilities and services available through the Department of Mental Health. When someone talks about mental health or a Mental Health Center, most people think of strait iackets and wild, “crazy” people. That is wrong. No one uses strait jackets any more, and bv far most of ti e people who go to the Mental Health Center are normal, everyday people who have some problems and want pro fessional advice. The local Mental Health Cen ter does have services for seri ous mental illnesses, but the rraiority of people who use the Center are coming for profes sional, personal advice, just like vou would go to a lawyer for legal advice or to a doctor for medical problems.
