Hints From The County Extension Chairman By - JERRY PURSER Wax Scale And Its Control Wax scales are among the most difficult ornamental plant pests to control. Adult scales are a quarter of an inch in di ameter and are covered with a thick, white, sticky wax which protects them from the envir onment and pesticides. Beginning in March wax scaes lay 100 too 2000 eggs .By late May tiny crawlers emerge NOTICE State of North Carolina, County of Transylvania. Under and by virtue of the powers of sale contained in a certain deed of trust executed by Hubert B. Gravlev and wife. Hazel G. Childs, as trustee by an in strument dated April 12, 1973, and recorded in Deed of Trust Bode 93, page 652. Records for Transylvania Countv, default having been made in the pay ment of the indebtedness there by secured, the said deed of trust being by the terms there of subfect to foreclosure, the undersigned trustee will offer for sale at oublic auction to the highest bidder for cash, at the courthouse door in Brevard. North JT East 95 feet to the and move about, searching for a place to feed. Feeding oc curs along tbe twigs and oc casionally along the midribs of leaves of numerous woody or namental plants. Once the crawlers insert their sucking mouth parts into the host plant, they are incapable of moving. After moulting, the tiny scale begins to secrete its waxy cov ering from which it gets its name. The young scales ma ture throughout the summer, and as tbe waxy covering is produced, they became increas ingly tolerant to pesticides. Wax scales overwinter as adults; there is only one gen eration per year. Control: Handpicking in win ter (if practical) is an effective control measure. As scales may lay their eggs even though removed from their host plants, they should be destroyed after removal. Because the crawlers emerge from under their mo thers protective wax 'coating for two or three weeks and be cause our recommended pesti cides do not persist in tbe en vironment, repeat applications of whichever pesticide is used must be made. Unless pesti cides are applied within a month after the crawlers emerge, control will be incom plete at best. Apply one of the following pesticides two or three times at ten dav inter vals starting about June 15th. Cvgon, De-Fend (dimethoate) 26.7% emulsifiable conce ntrate - 4 teaspoons per gallon of water.
