Local Doctor Keeps Academy Certification James H. Sanders, Jr., M.D., of the Brevard area has completed continuing educa tion requirements to retain active membership in the American Academy of fam ily doctors. The Academy for merly was called the Ameri can Academy of General Practice. The requirements call for members to complete a mini mum of ISO hours of accredited continuing medical study every three years. Members become eligible for re-election at the end of the third year following their election to membership. Festival Of Arts Concludes (Continued from Page One) event that a large number of those attending were tourist and visitors from other areas. Many local people did turn out, but in some instances, they were outnumbered by visitors. “We tried to have such a va riety of events scheduled that there would indeed be ‘some thing for everyone’, and I cer tainly feel that that was the case,” Mr. Matheson noted. “Artistic endeavors in all forms were in evidence, and if you didn’t like painting, music, drama or crafts, you could even come down Davidson River in an innertube,” he said. The Festival of Arts was sponsored by the Brevard Chamber of Commerce with many organizations supporting the overall effort by backing in dividual events. These include: AARP, Brevard Rotary Club, Transylvania County Depart ment of Recreation, Schenck Job Corps, U.S. Forest Service, Brevard Music Lover’s Club, Brevard Little Theatre, Caro lina Mountain Hiking Club, Bre vard Music Center, Brevard Junior Women’s Club, Brevard Kiwanis Club, Transylvania Art Guild, 8 Crafters, Sylvanite Mineral Club, Brevard Jaycees, Brevard Jaycettes, Transyl vania Stamp Club, Rural De velopment Panel, Transylvnia Council of Garden Clubs, and many, many individuals. Department Of Agriculture Issues New Food Stamp Rules The Food and Nutrition Ser vice (FNS) of the U. S. De partment of Agriculture has issued new regulations for the food stamp program. The regulations implement amendments to the Food Stamp Act contained to the Agricul ture and Consumer Protection Act of 1973 (Public Law 93-86). They also include revisions re sulting from the Supreme Court decision that the “tax depen dency" and “relatedness” pro visions are unconstitutional, and make other necessary changes in the program. The new regulations will be come effective upon publication in the Federal Register, sched uled for Monday, July 15. States must complete imple mentation of the new provisions which directly relate to the cer tification of households by Nov. 1, 1974, for ell new applications and any sub»tq"ent applica tions, and by March 1, ur/a ior all other households. The new regulations make the cal progress through continuing education. The Academy, founded in 1947 and headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., was instru mental in the establishment of a new primary specialty in family practice in 1M>. The new specialty is expected to increase the numbers of fam ily physicians available to serve the public in the future. The Academy’s continuing education program is the foundation of eligibility for family doctors now in prac tice who apply for certifica tion In the new specialty following changes: —Broaden eligibility cate gories to include the elderly in federally sponsored housing, and drug addicts and alcoholics in private nonprofit residential treatment facilities. —Allow the elderly to use food coupons to purchase meals in specified communal dining situations. —Require states to give wel fare recipients the option to have costs of their coupons de ducted from their grant and the coupons mailed to them. (States must implement this provision by July 1, 1975). —Allow recipients affected by the unavoidable breakdown of food stamp equipment to apply for food stamps under emerg ency eligibility standards. —Require that income in clude the acfi'<u value of hous ing receh'dd in kind from an employ jr but not in excess of per month. —Allow households living in remote areas of Alaska to use food coupons to purchase cer tain i.^iting and fishing equip ment for procuring food. —Require that recipients be citizens of the United States or legally permanent residents. —Ban participation bv strik ers after a court has determin ed the strike illegal. —Reduce from 15 to 10 days the advance notice period given households whose benefits are being reduced or terminated. —Provide for a standard utility allowance unless the re cipient can verify his actual costs. —Require recipients to report changes in their income and de ductions within tan days, if the change is $25 or more. Similar ly, states must act on such changes within ten days. —Prohibit states from using personnel or facilities from either side of a strike or lock out to certify households for the food stamp program —Require that after 90 days from the date of registration for
