She said her parents had terrific senses of humor and that she grew up with jokes and laughs. With a grin she continued, “Al so. my mother was so insanely afraid that I would see sexy movies she always sent me to see comedies.” All of the comic greats were familiar to her, but she added, “I really wanted to be Jean Harlow.” She didn’t make it to the stage professionally as a co medienne or a pianist until she was in her mid-thirties and the mother of five chil dren. She had been perform ing at PTA and church so cials for years while working as a newspaper columnist, publicist and writer for a San Francisco radio station. Her first stage appearance was in March of 1955 at San Fran cisco’s Purple Onion. Through the years Miss DiUer has polished her “ugly” routine to a high gloss and is now busy adding new dimensions to her career. She has appeared in the title role in “Hello Dolly” on Broadway and is scheduling more and more appearances with symphony orchestras. However, she stressed that she is not about to relinquish her role as comedienne. “I’m really proud of my art and devoted to it. It’s my first love. It’s a wonderful way to make a living,” and she continued, “I love to make people laugh.” She was quick to stress that comedy wasn’t the oasiest way to make a living. “If you don’t get a laugh, you are A failure.'; Your whole reputation rides on every line. It’s like tight rope walking.” Asked about the face lift that could have completely changed her act she stated, “I was never really ugly. That was cre ated. I simply convinced peo ple that I was really torturoun ly mieahapen. But that wasn’t true.” She said, “I’m still pro jecting the same image while performing.” She wasn’t sure how she got to Brevard. “I never know how bookings happen. But my manager knows I love to do symphonies. He doesn’t even ask me about them. If it’s a symphony I would go to Nome, Alaska and p’ny on a MISCELLANEOUS FOE ADOPTION at the Animal Shelter. The comic artist was im pressed with the program at BMC and commented that she was “amazed” at the nirnber of concerts performed each sea son. She thought the atmos phere was “marvelous” and was particularly taken with opera director John McCrae. “You could tell he was opera the minute he opened his mouth. That wonderful voice! No one had to tell me what he did.” Miss Diller felt Brevard’s program was a good example of all types of entertainment moving from the population centers. “Entertainment is all over. In fact it’s more active in the hinterlands than the major cities.” Critics and high prices have helped kill Broadway which she characterizes as a “lovely old antique where you can get mugged on the way home from the theater.” Broadway is the place where a critic “who has dyspepsia an ulcer and an ugly mother-in-law” can determine the fate of a show. Las Vegas is now the goal of entertainers. And Las Vegas with a show she describes as “sheer bedlam” was her destination when she departed from Asheville Air port late Saturday night after playing to a standing room only crowd at BMC. President Russell stated that that the Chamber office will of necessity be closed for a four day period during the move. That period will be from Mon day, August 26th to Friday, August 30th, when the office will re-open. Two days will be used to pre pare for the move, which will actually take place on Wednes day, August 28th. Wednesday and Thursday will be used to straighten up, with Friday scheduled for re-opening. The actual move will be ; handled by a group of corps ; men from Schenck Job Corps, 3 Mr. Russell stated. j The next meeting of the Chamber will be on Tuesday, j September 10th, and it will be held in the Council Room of the Municipal Building. In other business Tuesday night, E. B. Matheson, chair man of the Steering Committee of the Festival of the Arts, gave an extension report on the re cent Festival. Mr. Matheson thanked the Chamber for its support and financial backing of the Festi val, and he also thanked each participating group and organi zation for their assistance in making the Festival such a big success. “Many of our local people worked hard in putting on the Festival,” Mr. Matheson noted, “But many tourists and visitors expressed to me what an out standing achievement it was for our community, and how much it meant for them as visi tors to be able to attend so many different and entertaining events. I think it’s something we can all take a great deal of pride in, and I’m certain we can look forward to an even bigger and better Festival of the Arts next year,” he con cluded. Several other brief committee reports were heard during the meeting, which was presided over by Mr. Russell. When you think of prescrip tions, think of VARNER’S, adv.
