To Our Readers
This issue of the Transylvania Times has a new
look, since we are now printing the entire paper
by the offset method. This means that our
pictures will look much clearer, our type will be
easier to read, and our ads will take on a much
more individual style. Most of uur make-up
work is still done here, but the actual printing of
the paper is being done on the huge press at the
Waynesville Mountaineer. It might take us a
while to get all the kinks out of this new (to us)
system, but we hope that it will make your'
munities in Western North
Carolina to carry out organized
clean-up and beautification
projects. Awards are provided to
recognize those doing out
standing work.

New Jail, School Bonds, Landfills Head
Agenda At Commissioners Meeting
Public Hearing
On New Jail
Is Main Item
There are many items on the
agenda for the meeting of the
Board of Commissioners next
Monday evening, including the
major item, the public Scaling on
the sale of bonds to construct a
jail.
The Commissioners are ex
pected to authorize $750,000 worth
of bond anticipation notes to pay
final costs on the three schools
now being constructed. Com
mission Chairman Bill Ives said
he hopes his fellow Com
missioners will agree to sell bond
anticipation notes rather than
bonds at this time, because the
interest rate is so high.
The best advice from bond
experts in New York persuaded
Mr. Ives that interest rates
should drop in 1975 and that
would be a more favorable time
to market long-term bonds.
County Planner Mike Epley
will present the Commissioners
with his views on whether or not
the county should operate the
landfill at Calvert or contract it
out io a private company.
County Attorney Bill White will
have the final lease with the State
Road Department to be approved
for the landfill. Mr. White is also
expected to have the final
agreement with the Rosman
Rescue Squad to operate a
county-owned ambulance in the
upper end of the county.
An ordinance regulating the
use of the “green boxes” located
around the county will be offered.
The proposed ordinance reads as
follows :
“Where containers are made
available by the Transylvania
County Board of Commissioners
to receive household garbage and
other waste the following will
apply:
1) No objects larger than 30” x
30” may be placed in containers.
2) Furniture or appliances may
not be placed in containers.
3) All waste of every kind must
be placed within the supplied
containers. If the container is
full, garbage or waste must be
taken to the next available
container or to the Landfill.
4) Setting fire to the contents of
a container in any manner is
forbidden.
5) Dead animals of any kind
may not be placed in containers
or delivered to the County
Landfill. They must be disposed
of according to existing State
Law.
Violation of this ordinance shall

Chamber Of Commerce Holds
First Meeting In New Quarters
Directors of the Brevard
Chamber of Commerce held their
first meeting in new quarters
Tuesday night as they met in the
Council Koom at the Brevard
Municipal Building.
The Chamber recently moved
its office from the Transylvania
County Library building where it
had been meeting for years into
the old city hall building right
next to the Municipal Building.
The change was necessitated
by the move of the library into
new facilities at the old Brevard
Post Office building. The old
library building will be renovated
into additional county offices.
Harry Corbin gave a brief
report to the Chamber on the
status of the three new school
buildings in the county, stating
that all three should be ready for
occupancy within the next
several months.
He also stated that bids on the
additions to Brevard and Rosman
High Schools will be let in
November.
Dr. Robert Davis noted that
Brevard College had opened with
an increased enrollment over last
year, and that the College was
anticipating one of its best years
ever.
The membership committee
reported that the Chamber’s
membership was slightly ahead
of last year. Total membership
now stands at 183. one more than
the 182 of this same time last
year. To date, sixteen new
members have joined the
Chamber this year.
Bill Ives made the motion that
the Chamber encourage the
Transylvania County Board of
Education to consider naming the
new Brevard Middle School after
the late John I. Anderson, who
had been such a staunch sup
porter of better schools here for
many years. The motion passed
unanimously, and the Board of
Education will be so advised.
Several other brief committee
reports were heard during the
meeting, which was presided
over by Chamber President
Charlie Bussell.
