County Will Run Landfill Operation —Continued From Page One Hahn read a letter from Brevard Mayor Charles Campbell requesting the commissioners to give their half of Franklin Park to the city. The commissioners responded by offering to lease the land to the city for a term of 50 years. County Attorney Bill White explained that the county could not simply give away its property, but a lease arrangement will accomplish the same purpose. One of the most time con suming items was the discussion surrounding the operation of the landfill at Calvert. The commissioners began by rejecting all bids from private contractors to operate the landfill. Chairman Ives said that after careful study the commissioners felt quite certain that the county could operate the landfill at far less cost. With this motion out of the way, they then restudied the bids for a front end loader. Ives asked White if they could accept a bid that did not meet the specifications. White asked for time to check the Statutes and a five minute recess was called, after which White reported that he felt the commissioners should not vary from the specifications. After several more com ments from representatives of the dealers, Chairman Ives moved that they accept the lowest bid which was sub mitted by Fiat Allis for its 7GB Loader at a price of $41,298. Social Services Director Don Morrison asked the commissioners for a small budget amendment due to excessive expenditures of his office caused by the Olin strike and other layoffs. After approving the request. Chairman Ives said he wishes publicly compliment the director on the fine work that was done during the strike by his department and he referred to a letter which had been received from the food stamp committee of the Paperworkers Union, which was also high in its praise of the Social Services Depart ment. As the time wore on, the commissioners went over bids to provide automotive servies. This bid was finally given to Frady’s Gulf Service. The firm will furnish all automotive services from gasoline to mechanical work for the remainder of this fiscal year. A contract was approved to provide additional suffleboard courts and a picnic shelter for Silvermont Park. Funds for this are coming from a Bureau of Outdoor Recreation grant. A set of by-laws for the Transylvania County Historic Properties Commission were approved along with the name change from Transylvania County Historical Com mission. County Extension agent Jerry Purser asked the Commissioners to purchase a set of mobile scales so that Rated ¥T¥~I Admission (R) -J-jJLr $1.50 7 Nites Starting Wed. Upon motion by Commissioner Clinton Owen, the Commissioners voted to buy the scales at a cost of $1,040. Toward the end of the meeting, a discussion was held concerning the recently completed audit of the county and the recommendations of the auditors. The com missioners voted to follow most of the auditors recom mendations. A request to change the name of Harry Blake Road to Clement Road was refused. This was done, according to Ives, when he learned from County Clerk Judy Mathews that the road has 84 homes and only 25 signatures were on the petition. Therefore, they could not tell whether a majority of the people wish to have the name changed. The Commissioners unanimously appointed Gaylord Lyon to the County Health Council and named Glen Matheny chairman of this council. Bearcatting puts you thene.
