Brevard Artist's Works Featured A one woman show of watercolor paintings by Mrs. Beth Mitchell of Brevard is being featured beginning tomorrow at the Brush and Palette on East Main Street. Mrs. Mitchell travels all over Transylvania County to paint. Most of the paintings in this show have been executed over the past six to eight months which she calls “the painting season”. An enthusiastic painter, Mrs. Mitchell paints directly from nature “on the spot”. She patiently seeks out beauty and interest in the North Carolina country side and carefully composes her subject before starting to paint. Waterfalls are one of her special talents and she displays a unique ability in painting them. The whims of the weather can greatly influence the success or failure of a pain ting. Ms. Mitchell has finally found a way to partially control this situation by buying a four-wheel drive vehicle. She removed the back seat and carpeted the floor, thus giving her a mobile outdoor studio. When it starts to rain or the wind suddenly turns cold, she climbs in the machine and continues to paint. Mrs. Mitchell brings to the exhibit a long background of artistic training. A graduate of George Peabody Teacher’s College in Nashville, Ten nessee, she taught art in public schools for some time. She studied further at the Chicago Art Institute and with several individual teachers, most memorable of whom she feels was Eliot O’Hara. Widely traveled she has painted her way across most of the United States from the Grand Tetons in Wyoming to the rock bound coast of Maine. She has had one woman shows in several Illinois cities; Portland, Maine, Hendersonville, and in Brevard. The Transylvania Hospital and St. Philips Episcopal Church each own one of her paintings, gifts from the ar tist.
