Evergreen Enemy Bagworms feed mainly on evergreens such as ar borvitae, red cedar, juniper, hemlock and pine. They also may attack apple, elm, maple, sycamore, oak, locust or willow trees. Bagworm injury is frequently overlooked early in the season when the bags are small. By the time actual feeding is noted, these pests have developed to a stage where they are very difficult to control with chemicals. Life Stages - Eggs remain in the bag over winter. These eggs hatch in the spring-about the last of May. The young larvae (caterpillars) begin to feed immediately after hat ching and build a bag or “cocoon” lined with silk and having leaves and stems of the host plant on the outside. This cocoon gets bigger as the caterpillar developes. It reaches full size about mid August. The caterpillar takes its protective bag wherever it goes. The larvae change to pupae within the cocoon. The male moths leave the cocoon from late August to early November. It is not so bad when they “begin to fall” but when they cover you up, they become a nuisance. Sometimes, though, a nui sance can be converted in to something useful and that is what this story is about — compost. Compost is organic ma terial which has been treated to hasten decom position. When ready to use, it should be about the consistency of leaf mold such as you would find on on the forest floor in the deep woods. Leaves make good com post because they decom pose rather rapidly, when black in color with a furry body and feathered antennae. Their wing spread is about one inch. The females are more or less maggot-like, white in color and never leave the cocoon. Each fertilized female produces 500-1,000 eggs in the cocoon or “bag” before she dies. Control - Where practical it is advisable to remove and burn the cocoons. Scissors or a sharp knife may be used. Chemical treatments are very effective if applied while bags are still small. Apply sprays of Bacillus, Chlorpyrifos (Dursban), diazinon, malathion, or dimethoate (Cygon, De-Fend) as soon as infestation is noted and again seven to 10 days later. Thorough coverage is essential. properly handled, and what is more important, they contain no weed seed. It is best to coniine the leaves in a pit of some sort or build a pen with log's, old slabs or boards. The pen may be any con venient size and about five feet high for convenience in filling. An abandoned trench silo would be fine. Pack leaves in layers about one foot deep. Wet ting will facilitate pack ing. As each layer is pack ed in, spread one cup of an 8-8-8 fertilizer and one cup of dolomitic lime stone on each 10 square feet of surface area. This will give you a starting point from which you can judge about the amount of fertilizer and lime to uae without measuring each time. Keep all layers wet as you build the pile but do not add enough water at any one time to wash out soluble fertilizer ma terials. When finished, the cen ter of the heap should be left lower than the sides to absorb rain water. Keep the pile wet at all times to promote rapid de composition. This is es pecially important during dry periods. One ton of dry leaves will yield about three tons of good rich compost in about six months. Do you know of a cheaper source of organic material? Or one that has so many uses? LOSSES Plant diseases on the average cause about a 10 per cent crop loss of an nual U.S. production of all crops. Worldwide, the loss is closer to 20 per cent, according to North Carolina State University plant pathologists. These losses become increasing ly significant as popula tion threatens to outrace man’s ability to produce food. When you think of prescriptions, think of VARNER’S, adv Home worth more now?
