REPORT FROM The Transylvania County School System A Weekly Column By - Richard Voso Discipline, according to the 1974 Gallup poll, is the most serious problem facing the schools of our nation. The findings of this years’ poll are in agreement with previous surveys in which discipline was named the top problem in five of the last six years. This conclusion, like all others of the Gallup poll, refers to the nation as a whole and not to any particular county or community. All the poll findings are, however, useful as means of comparing Transylvania County with national trends. Our school administrators use such information in planning for the future. Significant differences from national findings may indicate local school strengths or weaknesses that require further study or action. This year’s poll found in tegration - segregation ranking as the second greatest problem followed by lack of adequate financing in third place. Box 308 Brevard, N.C.28712 11-21-4tcT w taining “good” teachers is fourth, the student use of drugs is fifth, and school or class size is sixth. Other problems in the top ten are poor curriculum, lack of parent interest, lack of proper facilities, and poor school board policies. Although the schools’ many real problems received much attention, the same survey noted that parents who have children in school today believe, by a wide margin, that schools are better now than when they were students. Of those questioned 69 per cent said schools today are better, 17 per cent said they are worse, nine per cent said they are the same and five per cent had no opinion. Some of the reasons given for the belief that schools have improved include a wider variety of subjects offered, better facilities and equip ment, improved teaching methods, more qualified teachers and equal op portunities for all students. Another survey question asked who was at fault when students did poorly in school. Most people (57 per cent) placed the blame on the children’s home lives. The second most frequently mentioned (14 per cent) were the children themselves, followed by teachers (12 per cent) and schools (6 per cent). Home Office: Columbus, Ohio m Looking at these questions only; what problems do the schools have? Are the schools better now? And whose fault is it when children do poorly in school? We discover a general belief that schools have im proved over the years but they still face serious problems that are mainly home caused. Transylvanians might find it interesting to answer these three questions and compare their answers to the national survey. School personnel are doing the same thing in their continuing effort to provide the best possible school program for the youth of our county. It is through constant questioning, examination, and comparison that knowledge is gained that allows effective planning for the future. r Sweetwater Farms Gets Final Okay The Transylvania County Planning Board granted final plat approval of Section III of Sweetwater Farms at a regular session of the Board on Monday, Nov. 25.
