OFFICER OF YEAR — High way Patrolman Thad Elmore on Friday night was named Law Enforcement Officer Of The Year during the annual Jaycee banquet at Brevard College. Shown presenting the officer a plaque is Mayor Charles Campbell. (Times Staff Photo) High Motivation Is Haggai Theme —Continued From Page One and whose daily radio broadcasts are heard coast to coast, told jokes as readily as he quoted the Bible in his 45 minute talk. ' He paid tribute to the 13 former winners of the DSA award who attended the banquet, recognizing them as still vitally active citizens. “Thanks for having Thad Elmore here,” he said. Patrolman Elmore earlier had received the Outstanding Young Law Enforcement Officer award, then left early because he was on duty. Dr. Haggai, who was nearly 30 minutes late to the banquet, said he might have met Patrolman Elmore under different circumstances, as he sped those last miles into Brevard. He joked about situations that are too serious to joke about, he said. “We are telling political jokes until the election and half of them were elected.” Some people have difficulty understanding Southern politics, he said, for instance, Arkansas politics, as he gave his explanation for recent actions of Rep. Wilbur Mills. “Brother Wilbur with his normal zeal was trying to baptize the Argentine Catholic in the Tidal Basin and she wouldn’t go under,” he said. “Our biggest problem,” he said, “is taking ourselves seriously. It isn’t denying God so much as a self-sufficiency in ourselves. We are presumptuous enough to take credit for every step forward. “When you say thank you, it’s an admission of need. When I say thank you to God, it’s a reminder to me that I am not self-sufficient.” He remembers his father’s advice to start every day by writing down four things you are thankful for. It is amazing, he said, what it does for a person’s outlook. “If you wait until you have enough to be thankful for, you will never make the scene,” he said. He told of a time during the depression when there was no food in the house, and his father gathered the family together. “Let us thank God that we are strong enough so that this will make better people of us,” his father said. It took him years to un derstand his father’s theology, he said. Membership of Brevard Chamber Of Commerce 1974 --Anderson, Katherine Pisgah Broadcasting Company -Andrews, Wick P.
