Horse Fair This Weekend In Raleigh RALEIGH — The horse industry in North Carolina is going to be presenting something just a little dif ferent in January - a Horse Fair sponsored by the N. C. Horse Council. The fair is to be held m conjunction with the Mid Winter Horse Show sponsored by the Border Belt Hor semen’s Association and the N. C. Quarter Horse Breeders Sale at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. Starting at noon on Satur day, January 11, the fair is a new idea in helping to educate non-horse owners and horse owners in breed differences, and the ways horses can be enjoyed. Included are Appaloosas, Arabians, Quarter Horses, Morgans, Saddlebreds, Thoroughbreds, Paints, Paso Finos, Walking Horses and others. Each breed will have a booth with free literature. Films and slides will be shown and representatives will be there to answer questions. On Sunday afternoon, Jan. 12, there will be a 15-minute live demonstration of each breed. The Mid-Winter Horse Show will run from Jan. 10 through Jan. 12, except for the sale beginning at noon Saturday, the 11th. Glenn Petty, horse specialist with the N. C. Department of Agriculture, said this sale may provide some very good buys with the current tight money situation. GOODWILL MOTOR CO., INC. Pontiac— Buick 220 S. Broad St.—Dial 884-4111 Brevard, N. C. Survey Shows State Ranks High In Immunizations North Carolina is one of the top five best immunized states in the nation against measles, polio, rubella, diptheria, whooping cough and tetnus (DPT), according to John Irvin, program coordinator for the state’s immunization program. Irvin said a recent survey, which included 1,000 two-year old children, showed that two year-olds with a basic series of immunizations had risen from 38 per cent in 1972 to 67 per cent in 1974. He said basic immunizations consist of thfee or more doses of DPT and oral polio vaccines, along with measles and rubella. The public health official said 79 per cent of North Carolina's two-year-olds have been adequately immunized against polio, compared to 60 per cent for the United States. Over 78 per cent have been immunized against measles compared to 61 per cent for the nation. He said the same picture holds true for DPT and rubella. Irvin paid tribute to county health departments, as well as private physicians for most of the success of the im munization push during the past two years. He said the survey revealed that 47 per cent of the two-year-olds receive their immunization from health departments, as opposed to 46 per cent from private physicians. Three per cent were immunized by the military, while four per cent received no shots at all. Irvin expressed concern that nearly one-third of the surveyed two-year-olds had not completed the basic series of shots. “In most instances the senes can be completed with one additional visit,” he noted. “We must also step up efforts to get black children properly immunized. Only 15 per cent of the black children are seen by private physicians, com pared to 59 per cent for It’s Time... March of Dimes Time. whites,” Irvin said. “The mother’s educational level has a direct bearing on her child’s immunization level,” Irvin stated. “Family size and the mother’s age are also contributing factors. We found that a child’s inw munization level goes up as the mother’s age goes up. However, it flattens out at age 29 and drops steadily throughout the rest of the childbearing years.” r ^ HARVEST-FRESH PRODUCE U.S. No. 1 WHITI POTATOES 10-LB. ViNT-VU BAG 20-LB.
