U. S. D. A ATLANTA, Ga. — The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced an increase in its rates of payment to state educational agencies to assist schools taking part in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. The increases, which are in effect^hrough June 30, were announced by USDA’s Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) to implement the provision of Public Law 93-150, passed in Nov., 1973. It provides that payment rates for school lunches and breakfasts be adjusted twice each year in line with changes iujUie “food away from home” series of theU.S. Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index (CPI). During that period, the series increased 5.79 per cent, and the lunch and breakfast rates approximate that amount of increase, rounded off to quarter-cent intervals as provided by law. In the National School Lunch Program, the national average payment to states, to be used by them to assist local school authorities help defray food costs of each lunch served, will be increased three-quarters of a cent from 11 to 11.75 cents. Within that average, states are authorized to vary the rate of reimbursement to in dividual schools, subject to certain conditions, up to a maximum of 17.75 cents a lunch. Previously the ceiling was 17 cents. It can range as high as 79.25 cents for a free lunch and 69.25 cents for a reduced-price lunch. The national average payment to states for each breakfast served to eligible children will be incrased one nan cent — from 8.75 cents to 9.25 cents. The additional average payment to states for each reduced-price breakfast, which has been 16.50 cents, will be increased to 17.50 cents.
