Blue Devil Wrestlers Hand Enka First Loss Of Year, 34-24 The Brevard Blue Devils proved once again that they are “King of the Mountain” as the local grapplers soundly whipped previously un defeated Enin by a 34-24 margin here last Friday night. The Jets won ten matches in a row before tangling with Coach Frank Robinson’s squad, while the Blue Devils were trying to atone for their lone loss of the season, a 35-25 Ibss at the hands of Reynolds on Tuesday of last week. And atone they did! And the icing on the cake came just this past Tuesday bight when Brevard’s matmen defeated the Hendersonville’s Bearcats by a 51-11 score at Hendersonville to bring their Season’s mark to 10-1. Last Friday, the Enka Jets brought seven undefeated wrestlers here to do battle with the Blue Devils, but only two of them, Mike Rhodes in the ICO pound classification, and Tim Pegram in the 134 pound classification, kept their records unblemished. Rhodes pinned “Chuck" Weiss, and Pegram won a close decision over Marty Blackwell to record two of Enka’s five wins for the night. Two pivotal matches really put Brevard in good shape as Jeff Brookshire decisioned Sprinkle in the 147 pound class and Todd Aiken pinned Newman in the 16J pound class. Swafford, Mike Owen had pinned Doug Swafford, and James Hahn had decisioned Warren. The Blue Devils dropped three matches with Pegram’s win over Blackwell, Meadow son’s decision over Garland Powell, and a forfeit win by Hollofield. But Jeff Norman put the match out of reach for the visitors by handing Tommy West his first loss of the year on a pin, and Clint Cox did the same with a decision over Benny Plemmons. In the last match of the night, Enka’s Fish won over Smith with a pin, but the final outcome had already been decided as the Blue Devils won their ninth match in 10 outings. Tuesday night against Hendersonville it wasn’t even close as Weiss, Masterson, Avery, and Owen opened by pinning their opponents. Rahn and Blackwell won decisions, Powell lost a decision, Brookshire had a draw, Aiken pinned, Mike Norman and Jeff Norman won decisions, Brevard lost by forfeit in the 197 pound class, and Smith pinned his opponenet to give the Blue Devils the 51-11 win. Brevard travels to Erwin for their next important match this Friday night. Rosman Tigers Win Over Cane River, Lose To Cullowhee The Rosman Tigers put it all together last Saturday night to defeat Cane River 67-60, but Cullowhee proved too tough for the Tigers at Rosman Tuesday night as they won handily 61-46. The Tigers, who now stand 2-10 for the season, got out standing performances from Bobby Galloway with 17 points, Gary Crowe with 16, Rackley with 13, and Jim McCall with 10 as they took the measure of Cane River last Saturday night. Rosman's girls lost to Cane River 44-31, while Cane River’s Jayvees won a real squeaker over the Tiger Jayvees by a 50-48 score. Tuesday night Rosman hosted the Rebels from Cullowhee and both the boys and girls teams lost to the visitors. James Myers and Gary Crowe posted 12 points apiece, but that wasn’t quite enough as the Rebels outlasted the Writer Wants Biology Class For Anti-Hunters By JIM DEAN My wife could never kill anything. She doesn’t even like to set a mouse trap, and she certainly doesn’t care anything about hunting. But the fact that she is married to an outdoorsman who likes to hunt now and then doesn’t bother her because she’s got a pretty good grasp of biology. She knows regulated hun ting does no harm to wildlife populations. She knows that hunters pay huge sums of money to support important wildlife management, protection and research. She also knows that without these programs, many species of wildlife in this county which are enjoying record populations might be en dangered. I think her attitude is rather typical of most people who do not hunt. Hunting isn’t for them, but they don’t really begrudge anyone else from doing it. Unfortunately, there is a small but outspoken group which does not share this opinion. They don’t want to hunt, nor do they want anyone else to hunt. I don’t doubt their good intentions, and I respect their right not to hunt if that is their wish. Whether they hunt or not is none of my business. I have read a good bit about what some of the more out spoken anti-hunters have to say, and 1 have come to the firm conclusion that their main problem is one of education. There’s not much wrong with them that a good course in basic high school biology wouldn’t cure. Hie problem is that most of the data they furnish to sup port the abolishment of hunting is founded in gross ignorance of biology. In most cases, I think this is ac cidental. In others, I suspect it is intentional. There are lots of examples, but let me cite one that I ran across recently. Sidney Harris is a nationally known columnist whose column appears in many newspapers. Harris is an accomplished writer and his work is almost always interesting. He has always struck me as a fair minded sort, and he ap parently is a strong believer in the value of education. Yet in a recent column he is guilty—I think innocently—of committing (me of the sins he despises most—making emotional statements that have no basis in fact. Harris writes, “Animals don’t kill their own kind, as we do; animals don’t kill for sport or out of boredom, as we do; animals don’t kill more — Turn To Page 7A put the Blue Devils out of reach in the match as they won 34-25. The loss was the first for West this year. (Times Staff Photo) Tigers 61-46. Tommy Simpson claimed scoring honors for the night as he accounted for 20 points for the Rebels. In the girls f ame, Lori Moody led Cuilowhee to victory over the Tigerettes with 16 pc'nts as the visitors won 48-33. This Friday night Rosman entertains Glenville at the Rosman High gym. Tornado Track Team Enters Indoor Meets The Brevard College track team will compete in five indoor meets soon in order to prepare the team for the upcoming tough outdoor schedule. While most of the meets will be of low key nature, those competing well and qualifying nationally will continue on to the Junior College National Indoor Championships in March on the 7th and 8th. \ The track team managed to remain basically intact from last year, even with the loss of Parkway Fish Season Is Outlined Granville B. Liles, superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway, has discussed the trout fishing seasons for the North Carolina portion of the Blue Ridge Partway. “As the trout season in North Carolina waters opened on January 1, area fishermen should be made aware of the fact that not all Parkway waters are open for fishing under the same dates as established by the State”, said Liles. “The fishing season shall begin on the first Saturday in April and shall run through October IS on the following Parkway waters located in North Carolina: Basin Creek and its tributaries in Doughton Park, Trout Lake in Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, Ash Bear Pen Pond, Boone Fork River and its tributaries above the Park boundaries, Cold Prong Branch, Laurel Creek, Price Lake, Sims Creek, and Sims Pond in Julian Price Memorial Park.” “We do want fishermen to know, however, that they can fish all other Parkway streams located in North Carolina under the season and regulations as Established by the State of North Carolina. “Our special regulations and shorter season applies only to the streams that are located primarily within the Parkway boundaries in their upper drainages and to the lakes and ponds.” Further information about the fishing program on the Parkway can be obtained from Parkway headquarters or from any Parkway ranger. Cornelius Addison and Osmond Ashman. To pick up the slack lost by Addison and Ashman, Brevard recruited Clifton Dubard, the state champion in the 100 yard dish, from Columbia, South Carolina. His best time is 9.8 for the 100 yard dash and 22.4 for the 220 yard dash. With the majority of the team reporting in relatively good shape from the Christ mas vacation, the outlook for a successful indoor season is very good. (Times Staff Photo) Tornados Whip Lees-McCrae, North Greenville, Chowan The Brevard College Tor nados upped their season’s record to 10-7 and their Western Carolinas Junior College Conference mark to 4 1 with a 65-64 win over the Lees-McRae Bobcats here Wednesday night at Boshamer Gym. It took a 15-foot bank shot by Clay Alston with only two seconds remaining to give the Tornados their hard-earned win over the Bobcats, who had battled back to the lead after Brevard had led by eight at halftime 35-27. Alston was Brevard’s high scorer with 20 points, while Tom Horonzy was close behind with 18. Brevard’s lone WCJCC loss B £ to date came last Friday night as Wingate broke open a close game to down the Tornados 69 . That game was delayed for minutes due to power failure caused by the storm and high winds that swept through the area Friday night. The Tornados battled back after th“ir loss to Wingate to win their last three, over Chowan last Saturday night, over North Greenville Monday night, and their last second thriller over Lee-McRae Wednesday night.
