J •' REPORT FROM The Transylvania County School System A Weekly Column By - Richard Voso Think of a world in which just about everybody but you is a giant 12 feet tall. It’s a world in which the bottoms of most windows are just above the top of your heat, a world in which you climb to get into a chair and once there your feet dangle far from the floor, a world in which dogs are the size of full grown horses! Frightening isn’t it? Imagine that for all your life you have known just a few of the giants and they have cared for you, clothed you, fed you, given you constant attention and protection. And then, without your understanding, everything changes. You are dropped off, placed in a room with some 25 strangers, all your size, and just one unknown giant. Everything is new, your world’s upside down. No one seems to care for you or give you the attention you want, you need. A frightening experience at the least? Welcome to the world of the five year old as he enters school. It’s brand new and full of different, frightening, and challenging experiences. It’s a world in which the child who was the center of all attention in the family is now just one more in a crowd. It’s a place in which everything is too big or too loud, no one seems to understand or is willing to listen. It’s like being com pletely lost in a huge city of strangers. This is one of the most important and difficult times in the life of a youngster, a time when he needs all the help he can get. Transylvania County is fortunate to have many residents willing to offer a helping hand to children as they begin their school career. Volunteers are assisting in schools from one of the county to the other. From T. C. Henderson to Penrose Elementary mothers, grandmothers, college students can be found gently and patiently giving students the boost they need to make them feel taller in a strange new world. For some students knowing there is an adult Friends Of The Library Holland Articles Put In Showcase BY BETTY McILWAIN There is another great display in our showcase at the county library and we urge you to go by to see this collection of memorabilia made by Pauline and William Scarborough. The authentic Vollendam costume was made for Mrs. Scarborough. Be sure to en courage the children to notice the specula boards. Cookies made from these molds are part of the Christmas festivities. Mr. Scarborough has made labels for all the items. Our thanks to Pauline and Bill for this most interesting display. Our film committee has made selections for the new series to begin February 11. For others, because there is no one; school is frightening and frustrating. They need someone to care just about them, someone to listen as they struggle to read, someone to gently explain as they try to understand arith metic, someone to give them an approving smile for some small success. They need a friendly giant of their very own to extend a helping hand. The qualifications of a giant are few and simple; time to give, love of children, patience, gentleness and understanding If you think you qualify, call the principal of your school. He or she has many youngsters willing to adopt a giant. Alcohol Costs N.
