THE EVERYDAY
COUNSELOR
BY
DR. HERBERT SPAUGH
We find in life that which we
seek. Jesus said, “Seek and ye
shan find.” Experience
proves it. It depends upon our
attitude of mind and our
altitude of expectation.
I recall this couplet from my
college speaking class, “Two
men looked out from behind
the bars: One saw the mud the
other saw the stars.”
We are fed so much of the
negative by the news media
today that it calls for real
effort to take an honest look at
what’s good in life. A
correspondent writes a good
letter which gives me a lift. I
want to share some of it with
you.
“I read your column The
Everyday Counselor in the
Charlotte News and I want to
tell you how much I ap
preciate it. So much news is
depressing. Everything in the
world seems so hopeless. It is
refreshing to read a positive
column that gives hope and
encouragement today.
“Please put my husband
and me on your prayer list. We
have been living on a fixed
income. There are times when
we wonder how we will
manage to survive. My
husband has an arrested
disease. Please pray that he
will be completely healed.
“If I or my husband is living
a life which is not pleasing to
God, please pray that we may
seek God’s will for us. We are
church members and strive to
live a Christian life, yet we
cannot seem to be able to have
the very reedful things in life.
I pray, but nothing seems to
happen. Yet I still try to have
faith in God that he will
prosper and bless us.”
This couple is feeling the
crunch, felt by many today,
who are living on fixed in
dome. They don’t have the
answer, but God does. I
believe that. Jesus said, “Seek
,ye first the kingdom of God,
‘and his righteousness; and all
;t&tee (material) things shall
jt>e added unto you.” David
'echoed the same thought in
•the 37th Psalm where he
; wrote, “I have been young,
>8nd now I am old; yet have I
loot seen the righteous for
;saken, nor his seed begging
JBread.”
> It is my conviction and
{experience that they which
; yield their lives completely to
; the Lord, trust Him and follow
His direction in faith, will
{receive what they need. That
{was the experience of my
ither who was a successful
itian businessman who
‘lived out a full life in his own
ibome.
• He was a dedicated tither. I
>.- . —
devote a chapter to him in my
biography, “The Boy, The
Man, The Bishop.” This has
been my personal experience
in every area of living. God
will provide us for the
financial needs for what we
need or adjust our lives to
what we have.
