Rule Relaxed On N, C. Pig Movement
1
RALEIGH — On-farm in
spection of North Carolina
feeder and breeding swine
within 90 days of sale will be
dropped effective February 1,
1975. All other intra-state and
interstate regulations will
remain in effect.
According to N. C. Com
missioner of Agriculture
James A. Graham the swine
movement requirement is
being relaxed because there
have no cases of hog cholera in
the state in two years. North
Carolina was certified hog
cholera-free January 16, 1974.
Graham praised the work of
the vo-ag teachers,
Agricultural Extension
Service, NCDA and USDA
inspectors and the farmers for
their joint cooperation in
enforcing swine movement
laws. “It is due to their efforts
that hog cholera and other
swine disorders are under
control in North Carolina.’’
Dr. T. F. Zweigart, state
veterinarian of the N. C.
Department of Agriculture,
pointed out, however, that
swine taken directly to a
livestock market to be sold for
other than immediate
slaughter must have been in
the possession of the owner
for at least 30 days and that a
permit from the state
veterinarian accompany all
hogs brought into North
Carolina with the following
exceptions; Swine entering
the state for the immediate
slaughter; feeder pigs
moving directly from a farm
where they have been located
for at least 30 days or from a
breed sponsored sale.
An official interstate health
certificate must accompany
all swine entering the stkte
except for immediate
slaughter whether or no* a
permit is required.
