t History Essay Winners * Named The winners of the American History Essay i Contest in Transylvania ~ County in the fifth, sixth, }, seventh, and eighth grades :i have been determined by the jtdges to be as follows: Fifth grade: Pam Hipp, iv Straus School. Her subject: “Nathan Hale”. Sixth grade: Carla Lynne McKinney, T. C. Henderson School. Her subject: “Molly Pitcher.” Seventh grade: Kathy Jones, T. C. Henderson School. Her subject: “Paul Revere.” , , Eighth grade: Ronald Dwight Chapman, T. C. Henderson School. His sub ject: “Francis Marion”. The young people, this year, could choose any person they wished in the framework of , , the subject set out by the National Society, Daughters , of the American Revolution which was “A Patriot of the American Revolution”. Mrs. Jack Mass, chairman of the contest in her capacity as historian of the Waightstill Avery chapter, stated that it was a very difficult decision for her panel of judges to choose a winner in each of the four grades, as all of the en tries showed evidence of good research on the part of the students and of fine cooperation on the part of the teachers. These Transylvania Schools winners will have their win ning essays entered in com petition with the winners of the contest in each grade in other towns in District I, DAR. These are Marion Murphy, Old Fort, Rutherfordton, and Waynesville. The winners of the district contest will, in turn, be in competition with the rest of the state, and eventually, with the National^ entries. Mrs. W. A. Parry, District I director, Mrs. Theodore Dehon, chapter regent, and Mrs. Jack Mass, chapter chairman, will present the four county winners with Bronze Medals on red, white and blue ribbons, with the words “Excellence in History - DAR Award” embossed thereon, in the near future. The winner of the State contest in each grade will receive a Silver Medal and a $10 cash award; the Southeastern Division Win ners will receive Gold Medals and the National winner in each grade will receive $100 Bond.
