The popular column’s author, Professor Monroe Evans Gardner, died in a Raleigh hospital Wed nesday morning, January 29, at the age of 79. Professor Gardner was a member of the North Carolina State University horticultural faculty for 47 years, during which time he had a large leadership role in developing North Carolina's horticultural industry. He was the head of the Department of Horticultural Science for 25 years, and he helped secure the first state appropriation to fund hor ticultural research in the state in 1937. He organized the N. C. Association of Nurserymen in 1936, the N. C. Commercial Flower Growers in 1947, and the N. C. Apple Growers Association in 1954. NCSU honored Professor Gardner by dedicating the new campus arboretum to him in 1973. He remained active until his death, helping neighbors and friends with their landscaping problems, promoting com munity gardening and beautification and writing his column, which has been distributed weekly for nearly 20 years to some 150 Tar Hell newspapers. The “Garden Time” column B. F. Allen Dies, Last Rites Held Burlin Fredrick Allen, 63, of Pisgah Forest, died Saturday at his home after a long illness. He was a millwright and welder. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Frances King Allen; a son, Dennis Allen of Pisgah Forest; six daughters, Mrs. Pat Pope and Mrs. Betty Gonce of Horse Shoe, Mrs. Peggy Anders, Mrs. Gwen dolyn Snyder and Mrs. Drema Mahoney of Brevard and Mrs. Deborah Jones of Leary, Ga.; two brothers, Clyde Allen of Horse Shoe and Russell Allen of Akron, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Neal Swangin of Brevard and Mrs. f ucy McCall of Balsam Grove; and 18 grandchildren. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in Pisgah Gardens. The Revs. Joe Medford and Ralph Banning officiated Pallbearers were Kenneth Allen, Russell and Allen Swangin, Tommy McCall and Ted and Edward King.
