On a joint return, a husband and wife with an income liability of $2 or more may each designate $1 to the fund, for a total of $2. If a husband or wife wishes to designate $1 and the other does not, “Yes” and “No” boxes are provided for each. Taxpayers filing individually who do not wish to participate in the Campaign Fund may check the “No” box provided on the front of Forms 1040 and 1040A. The Taxpayers filing in dividually who do not wish to participate in the Campaign Fund may check the “No” box provided on the front of Forms 1040 and 1040A. The IRS stresses that par ticipation by a taxpayer in the campaign fund check-off neither increases the tax due nor reduces any refund ex pected. Even though the deadline has passed for filing 1973 returns, taxpayers can still designate retroactively for that year, according to the IRS. To designate for 197" 'he IRS says, a taxpayer need only obtain a Form 1040X and check the appropriate box prior to Dec. 31, 1975. Ample supplies of the Form 1040X— which is also used to amend an individual tax return—may be secured at most local postoffices and banks or from IRS offices. Many employees may wish to call the IRS for its free Publication 585 entitled, “Voluntary Tax Methods to Help Finance Political Campaigns.” This handy leaflet discusses not only the Campaign Fund but also political contribution tax deducations and political contribution tax credits. On returns filed last year, according to the IRS, some $26-million was earmarked for the Campaign Fund, including $8.8-million designed retroactively for 1972. NEEDED: A flourescent light and an electric fan. DO THIS: Watch the fan as it speeds up when turned on and as it slows down when turned off. It seems to go forward, then backward and vice-versa. HERE'S WHY: A fluorescent lamp does not burn steadily, but gets bright, then dimmer, 60 times a second as the current in the line reverses itself 120 times a second. The illusion is a stroboscopic effect and is more noticeable in some of the older lamps. If the fan turns at such a speed that the blades are always in one position when the lamp is brightest, then the fan seems to be stopped. If the fan turns a little more rapidly the blades seem to turn forward slowly. If the blades turn a little slower they will seem to be turning backward slowly because of the position of the blades when the light from the lamp is at its brightest point. The human eye does not notice the fluctuation in the brightness of the fluorescent lamp. Here '’re Three Sources Transylvania county has three sources through which citizens may borrow or thopedic appliances without charge. They include the Masons, Woodmen of the World, and Western Carolina Community Action. Until this week requests were made through the Senior Citizens Information Referral Service under the direction of Dr. Douglas Tyson. St. Philips Church made available office space where a group of volunteers worked to find sources of needed ser vices to the elderly. The Referral Center now has moved to the office of Western Carolina Community Action in the Bryant Bldg., where Mrs. Rachel Delk, office manager, will receive calls at 883-8151. Orthopedic appliances are available to anyone, not just the elderly. Ansel Hart spoke for the Masons on its loan service. He said that his lodge has been offering this service for 30 years. Borrowers are expected to pick up and return appliances and to treat them responsibly. Hospital beds are loaned with new covers, and borrowers are expected to buy new covers when the beds are returned. Mr. Hart is willing to receive requests at his home, 884-4505. He is master of his lodge in 1955, chaplain in 1956, and treasurer ever since. The woodmen of the World also offer a limited service, according to J. I. Ayers. It has a few wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches which it lends for 90 days. It also expects borrowers to pick them up and return them. He is willing to receive requests at his store, 883-9331. Alfred Galloway, lodge secretary, will also take calls at 883-2468, as will Jo Terry, lodge treasurer, at his Texaco station, 884-4021. EVERYTHING UP Virtually everything seems to be affected by the strong trend of rising costs. On the farm, even baler twine was strongly affected last year. This material, used to hold to gether bales of hay, cost $9 per unit in 197$ and $25 in 1974. HOGS IN HISTORY Hogs were one of the first animals to be domestijttted. Even before the dynasties of Egypt were developed, hogs could be found in Egypt. The earliest Chinese farmers raised hogs, which were valued animals because they required little care and could forage for themselves.
