Blue Devils Co-Favored To Win MAC Wrestling Tournament The powerful Brevard Blue Devils will have to be con sidered the team to beat as the strong Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling tour nament takes place this Friday and Saturday at Owen High at Swannanoa. “1 feel real good about our chances,” Blue Devil bossman Frank Robinson commented, "But the field is extremely strong this year, perhaps the toughest ever, with Enka, Reynolds, and Tuscola all posing us a real strong challenge.” The Blue Devils have won six consecutive conference championships in a row, and that winning tradition is bound to stand them in good stead as they seek number seven this weekend. Four of the Blue Devils received number or' ceding in the tournament, and three others were seeded number two. Norman Masterson, returning sophomore all conference performer in the 107 pound class, has won all of his 34 varsity matches except for one draw, and is top seeded. Morris Avery is 15-0 on the year in the 114 pound class, but he drew number two seeding in the tourney, as did Mike Owen, another returning all-conference selection in the 121 pound class who was named the most outstanding wrestler in the tournament last year. Another grappler who is set to defend his all-conference selection from last year and ha3 been seeded number one to do so is James Rahn in the 128 pound class. In the heavier weight classifications, undefeated Jeff Norman in the 185 p«und class and powerful Clin Jox in the 195 pound class were both given top seeding in their classfications, while Jeff Brookshire was seeded number two in the 157 pound class. Other Blue Devil wrestlers who received high seeding in the tourney include “Chuck” Weiss in the 100 pound class, Marty Blackwell in the 134 pound class, Garland Powell in the 140 pound class, Todd Aiken in the 157 pound class, Mike Norman in the 169 pound ;lass, and James Smith in the heavyweight class. Competing in the tourney along with the Blue Devils, Jets, Rockets, and Mounties will be East Henderson, Er win, Hendersonville, Madison, Owen, Pisgah and Roberson. Owen High will host the action which will begin Friday at 2 p.m. with the preliminaries and the quarter finals at 7 o’clock. On Saturday, the semi-finals begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by first round consolations at 3 p.m., consolation finals at 5:30 and the finals at 8. Ultimately there will be an individual conference champion per weight class and an overall team champion. Rosman Tigers Earn 55-45 SMC Decision Over Swain The Rosman Tigers played their best basketball of the year at Rosman last Friday night to down the visiting Swain High Maroon Devils 55 45 in Smoky Mountain Con ference action. Wednesday night, the Tigers cooled off as they dropped a 50-33 decision to Highlands, but the girls came on strong to win their game over Highlands by a 54-33 margin. Rosman’s win over Swain last Friday was the Tigers’ first after 12 straight con ference losses, and the victory was sweet, indeed. Gary Crowe had the hot hands for the Tigers as he pumped in 21 points, aided by Ricky Racklfy’s 12. Rosman’s girls had no scorers in double figures and were defeated by Swain 34-25. Gary Crowe was again high man for the Tigers in the Highlands game with 14 points as the Tigers fell 54-33. Cindy Cathey had her best night of the year as she poured in 27 points to lead the Tigerettes to their 54-33 win. A good Rosman defensive effort kept any of the Highlands girls from scoring in double figures. The game ended regular season play for the Tigers, who now turn to post-season tournament action. Tom Horonzy and Clay Alston each had sixteen points for Brevard, while Reginald Fielder paced the Bobcats with 24 points. The loss dropped Brevard’s overall record to 13-10 on the year, and 7-4 in Western Carolinas Junior College Conference competition. The Tornados now embark on a four game homestand that will see them conclude regular season play, starting this Saturday night by en tertaining Spartanburg Methodist at Boshamer Gym at 7:30 p.m. Next Monday night the Tornados will host powerful nationally-ranked and league leading Anderson Junior College in a game that had originally been set for January 30. The officials didn’t show for that game, so it was postponed until next Monday night. Brevard’s two final home games will be against North Greenville on February 13 and against Frederick Military Academy on February 15. ENROUTE TO VICTORY in a recent match here, James Rahn is pictured getting his opponent in a precarious position on the BHS mat. James won all-conference honors in last years MAC tournament, and is set to repeat that performance in the big event at Owen High this weekend.
