Blue Devil Wrestlers End
Season At State Tournament
Brevard High’s wrestling
contingent didn’t fare too well
at the state wrestling tour
nament at Winston-Salem last
week, but that didn’t take
awa^&ny of the lustre from an
otherwise sparkling per
formance over the entire
season.
1 Mike Owen, Norman
Masterson and Garland
Powell all lost in opening
round action at the state meet,
while Jeff Norman captured
’Brevard's only two points of
the tourney by winning his
opener.
t<
A freak accident during his
second match caused Jeff to
collapse and ended his further
'participation in the tour
nament. He was leading his
opponent by 5-1 at the time,
but was unable to continue.
Coach Frank Robinson
stated that he still felt that
some changes would have to
be made before the
“wrestleback” matter of
selecting representatives to
the state meet would be en
tirely satisfactory.
“We lost two of our best
wrestlers in the wrestleback
at the sectionals at Tuscola,
and I don’t think we would
have done that if they had had
more time between their
matches,” he stated.
Explaining that he thought
the wrestleback idea was fair
in some respects, he went on
to note that it was unfair in
others.
“Take Morris Avery for
example,” he said, “Morris
had not lost a match all year
until he lost a close decision in
the finals of the sectionals.
Then, without hardly any rest
time, he is called on to wrestle
the number three finisher for
a spot in the state tournament.
They battle through
regulation time to a draw, and
then go through overtime and
are still tied. Then the three
officials vote, and by the
narrowest of margins, Morris
loses the decision to his op
ponent, who incidentally had
not wrestled since mid
afternoon. I can’t see how that
can be called fair,” he said.
Coach Robinson then went
on to praise his entire squad
for their efforts during the
season that led to their
seventh straight conference
wrestling championship.
“They did most everything I
asked of them, and I. ap
preciate the sacrifices they
made during the season.
Ihey’re a great bunch,” he
said.
“And I also want to thank
the many loyal fans and
supporters who turned out for
our matches,” he noted.
“Knowing that folks are
behind you sure makes things
a lot easier,” he concluded.
College Cagers Ousted From
WCJCC Tourney By Pioneers
The Brevard College Tor
nados fell to Spartanburg in
first round action in the
Western Carolinas Junior
College tournament last
Thursday, bringing their 1974
75 hoop season to a close.
The Tornados were leading
by seven points at 57-50 with a
little over six minutes
remaining to be played, but
Spartanburg’s tough full-court
pressure paid off, leading to
the 64-63 win for the Pioneers.
Spartanburg went into a
freeze, leading 62-61 with 3:47
left. Taylor later added a field
goal to the Pioneers’ total, and
Tony Creekmore added two
for Brevard before the horn
ended the contest with

The Brevard College Tor

meeting will be Saturday,
March 1. The meeting will
begin with breakfast at 8 a.m.
with the general meeting to
follow at 8:30 a.m. in the
college cafeteria. President
Ned Whitmire encourages all
members, and those who may

a fast growing college booster
club, or those who simply

organization.
President Whitmire has
stated the main topic of
discussion will be fund raising
projects, and the presentation
of the by laws to the mem

will soon be incorporated, and
Scott Peterson, a local at
torney and booster club
member, will be handling the
matter.
Right now the club is deeply
involved in the recruiting
season, and is helping Coach
John Meyerhoff with his
prospects.
The club is currently
making plans to roll out the
red carpet for about 15 new
prospects Meyerhoff will be
bringing to Brevard College
March 15.

Spring fishing in the war

of fish. Lake Norman, neai

fishing from March through
May for largemouth bass and
crappie. Perhaps one of the
best largemouth bass lakes ir
the state, it is also stocked
with striped bass. Numerous
marinas provide boat ramps

boat storage.

Meyerhoff has stated
Brevard must have a big man
of 6’ 8”, 6’ 9” class in order to
be a winner in the tough
Western Carolina conference.
Don Houts, the club’s
secretary, and Whitmire have
already made several trips
with Coach Meyerhoff for
scouting purposes.
At present, Meyerhoff is
well pleased with the outlook
for the 1975-76 season. He has
a strong nucleus of returning
players in David Wooten, Clay
Alston, Tom, (Tree) Horonzy,
Tom Brown, and Doug
Johnson just to name a few.

Hyco Reservoir, near
Roxboro, has excellent early
spring fishing for largemouth
bass and crappie. With
thousands of gallons of warm
water pumped into the lake
daily from a steam power
plant, the anxious spring
fisherman can push the
calendar ahead a few weeks
and find excellent fishing.
Bass grow exceptionally fast
in the warm water. Recently,
bass over 13 pounds have been
taken. Under private
authority, a $3 daily or $15
season permit is required to
launch a boat. A state fishing
license is also required. Boat
and motor rentals are
available.

ABILITY LIKE THIS was a contributing
factor in Dale Griffin’s selection to the Blue All
Star squad that was announced Sunday. Griffin
is shown above dribbling around Enka’s Keith
Price in a recent game here. Price, the leading
large school scorer in the area, will probably be
selected for the White (Buncombe County) All
Star squad. (Times Staff Photo)
Dale Griffin Named To Blue
All-Star Cage Squad
Dale Griffin, outstanding
senior athlete at Brevard
High, has been named to the
ten-member Blue All-Star
basketball squad that will
perform in the 23rd annual
Blue-White Senior All-Star
game that will be played at T.
C. Roberson on March 14.
Griffin, whose outstanding
leadership, floor play and
scoring ability made the Blue
Devils a tough competitior
during the season just past,
joins nine other outstanding
senior prep performers from
the WNC counties adjoining
Buncombe to form the Blue
All-Stars.
This contingent, billed as
“one of the strongest ever
assembled for the Blue-White
game” will face a like group of
all-stars from the Buncombe
county schools in the annual
classic on March 14.
The Blue Devil playmaker
averaged 13.4 points per game
and was considered one of the
better ball handlers in the
area. If anyone threw a full
court press at Brevard,
Griffin was the one called on
to beat it, and he seldom
failed.
A unique factor in Dale’s
selection to the Blue All-Stars
is the fact that he will be
following older brother
Denny’s footsteps on the honor
squad. Denny, now an out
standing performer for Coach
Larry Burch’s Presbyterian
College Blue Hose, was named
to the Blue All-Star squad in
1972.
Others named to the Blue
squad include Kim Dewese,
Steve Valentine and James
Hannah of Tuscola, Bobby
Wilkins and Chris Ferguson of
Hendersonville, James
Parrott of Pisgah, Jerry
Pryor of Edneyville, Gary
Morgan of West Henderson,
and Greg Slagle of Harris
High of Spruce Pine.
The Blue All-Stars will be
coached by Phil McKinney of
Harris High.
