REH-75-207 - 330 LINES (3 col. x 8" ) When In Need Of Job Printing, Call The Times >353 Diving Pioneer Sees Millions In Oceans BY JIM TYLER In the year 2000 about 12.5 million American people will have to go into the sea to perform work absolutely necessary for survival of the country, according to Captain George Bond, MD, U. S. Navy. Captain Bond, inventor of saturation diving and living in underwater habitats, was a speaker at the recent Southeastern Underwater Expo in Birmingham, Alabama. The 60-year-old doctor diver-experimenter is still saturation diving himself and talked like he was not far removed from the dav he could hold his breath un derwater for four minutes. Presently, he said, there are 3.5 million SCUBA divers in the United States. Most do not venture down farther than 100 feet or so, and, due to equipment and the type of compressed air they breath, can stay down for only a few minutes. Captain Bond predicts the average SCUBA diver in year 2000 will be able to go down to about 600 feet depths and work deep down for hours during one dive. The future diver will be using closed circuit gear and breathing a mixture of hydrogen, helium, argon, neon, and oxygen. Military and scientific divers will be going down to about 3,000 feet within 25 years. Beyond that, Captain Bond said, any combination of gases we now know will become too thick with the pressure for a diver to use. However, he predicted, the diver will go deeper and deeper. Divers will become fluid breathers and do away with the dangers of gas breathing under the tremendous pressures of great depths. A diver in »he future will have a closedcircuitbreathing aparatus attached to his body $58 Million Refunded To Tarheels Greensboro — During the first seven weeks of this year, more than $58 million were refunded to Federal income taxpayers in North Carolina, an average of $307 per refund. As of Feb. 22, more than 769,000 North Carolinians had filed their individual 1974 Federal tax returns, a 24 per cent increase over the same period last year. IRS is processing returns at a faster rate than last year and refunds are mailed to taxpayers about five weeks after the return is received, if no errors are found. Uial will liii ms lungs with a hyper xygenated fluid. Carbon dioxide can not be removed from the fluid, and the C02 buildup will limit his bottom time. Captain Bond said fluid divers will descend to perhaps , 12,000 feet. He said fluid v breathing by humans will be 9 accomplished within 10 years. Fluid breathing research is presently underway at Duke University. Crossword Puzzle ACROSS I Searched into 7. Minister to 13. Venerate 14 Thunderer 15 Musical dramas 16 Whole 17. Gives up 19.
