NEEDED: A hammer or uther implement with a loose handle. • DO THIS: Try to put the handle into the implement tightly By hitting the heavy head itself. Then try hitting the handle. The Hammer tightens when the handle is hit in line with its long axis. HERE’S WHY: The heavy iron has inertia — more inertia than the lighter wooden handle. As the handle is hit the energy of the blow is transmitted through it to the hammer, but the hammer’s inertia prevents it from moving as quickly as the energy in the handle reaches it. So the handle is driven in. Inertia is the property of matter which manifests itidf as a resistance to any change in the motion of a body (McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia). The inertia of a body is proportional to the mass of the body. A simplified definition: If the body is still, it tends to remain still; if it is motion, it tends to remain in that motion This is Newton’s first law of motion. HERBERT SPAUGH BY DB. HERBERT SPAUGH Learning how to have and maintain a good marriage is more important than learning to drive an automobile. Yet most of us pay more attention to the automobile and its care and upkeep than we do the care and upkeep of the marriage. In the first place most couples marry without reading the instruction book. Pew would think about buying an automobile without taking driving lessons and reading the instruction book. Yet they enter into the marriage relationship without in struction or lessons. First of all instruction books for establishing and main taining a good marriage are available. I have written one called, “Pathway to a Happy Marriage.’’ This I recommend to my readers along with the “Sex Manual,” by Lombard Kelly, M. D. Most of the letters which come to this desk are from homes where the marriage is in sore need of adjustment and repair. I am quite sure that the writers of these letters take better care of their automobiles and household equipment than they do their marriages. Every automobile driver knows that he has to put gas into the tank and oil in the crankcase. If he is a little more knowledgeable, he realizes that the chassis must likewise be lubricated and the tires kept inflated. If he doesn’t do these things, his automobile won’t function. A marriage is worth more than an automobile and it ought to have even better care. So many of these who write to me commence their W—a—m—mm—m marriage long before they are prepared for it. They marry on an impulse or to escape an unhappy home situation or on the rebound from a broken love affair. These are all poor reasons. I have been in marriage counseling for over 40 years. I can say emphatically that I have never examined a marriage in any kind of detail that I didn’t think could be repaired if the husband and wife wanted it. Following the parallel of the automobile, if your automobile gives trouble, you don’t junk it. Instead you take it to the repair shop and have it fixed. The best place to repair marriage is for the husband and wife to get on their, knees and to yield their lives to the Lord and make their heme Christ centered. Then things begin to fall into place. Most unhappy marriages are self-centered instead of God-centered. Instead of saying “Not. my will but thine be done,” to the Lord or even to one another, husband and wife each say, “My will be done.” That ends inevitably in collision. Those of you who are married and read this column, turn now and read the 13th chapter of I Corinthians which is the description of true love. Then measure yourself by it. If you don’t square up to these requirements, then get on your knees, confess your sins, and ask for the Lord’s help. Then get up and start demonstrating in your home, true sacrificial, spirtual love.
