James Ladd Morehead Winner considered. It is the largest and most lucrative scholarship program of its kind for un dergraduate students in American colleges and universities today, according to Mebane Pritchett, executive director of the foundation. The awards are patterned after the Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford University, England. The awards program was established in 1945 by the late John Motley Morehead, a native North Carolinian and executive with Union Carbide Company. Since the first scholarships were presented in 1951,719 Morehead Scholars have graduated from the University. Fifty-two Morehead Scholars entered UNC as freshmen last fall and 234 currently are enrolled. A number of Morehead Fellowships are awarded annually in the Law,Medical, Graduate and Business Graduate Schools to deserving college seniors. A postdoctoral fellowship in the School of Dentistry and an internship in the Morehead Planetarium and Observatory also are presented. Currently there are 38 Morehead Fellows studying at the University. Morehead Scholars from England now number 11. Four to enter in the fall will be announced next month in the Morehead English Scholars program which includes 20 public school in England. Morehead, the man who established the extensive awards program, was graduated from UNC in 1891. After completing his studies, he left Chapel Hill and his native Rockingham County to become a combustion engineer and chemist with Union Carbide. Morehead’s invention of the present day process for the economic manufacture of calcium carbide made possible the development of the Union Carbide and Carbon Company with which he spent his life. During World War II he served on the War Industries Board and later in his career, he was When you prescriptions, VARNER'S, ad Wastewater Training Class Begins March 13 A training course at Blue Ridge Technical Institute, Hendersonville, for Grades I and II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators will begin on March 13th, sponsored jointly by the Wastewater Cer tification Commission, Blue Ridge Technical Institute, and the North Carolina Water Pollution Control Association. The course will consist of practical classroom and field training in the proper operation and maintenance of Wastewater Treatment Plants. The classes will be held each Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. for 13 con secutive weeks. The primary purpose of the training program will be to upgrade the skills and knowledge of the operators so that they will be able to get greatest efficiency from the Wastewater Treatment Plants where they are employed, and discharge a minimum of Neighbors ” v/ 6***“*-. “Sounds like it’s for you, dear.” pollution into the streams of the State. This training also will assist the operators in qualifying for certification as now required by law. A fee of $40 will be charged.
