AARP Members Go To Workshop Seven members of the Brevard chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons participated in an all-day leadership wdflkshop at Lake Junaluska on Monday, March 3. The purpose of the workshop was to exchange experiences and to train chapter leaders for more effective services to AARP members and to their communities, Mrs. Berta Marquet said. Joseph Paxton, assistant state director, presided at two sessions. The others attending included Paul Goeser, chapter president; Albert Muller, vice president; Eunice Scarlett, secretary; Marion Lawton, treasurer; DeWitt Parsons, program chairman; and Mrs. Marquet, publicity chairman. ‘In the general meeting three Brevard delegates were speakers: Mrs. Marquet sgoke on publicity; Mr. Parsons, on programming; and Mr. Goeser, on com munity service. The other three speakers covered the responsibilities and actions of thh nominating, membership, atfd legislative committees. Problems of the npiscellaneous offices were then discussed in separate meetings of officers and committee chairmen, she said. The third session was again combined, where the full delegation heard reports from each of the specialized discussion groups. •5 Eight chapters from Western North Carolina were represented, three of which have recently been organized. Brevard chapter is one of the largest, now having a membership of over 300, according to Mrs. Marquet. AARP is open to anyone 55 years of age or older. Regular meetings are held in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of <.4 ._._ each month, unless otherwise announced. “Together, the membership encourages an acti 'e, happy retirement; sponsors recreation; participates actively in community af fairs; and monitors news and legislation affecting retirees,’’ says Mrs. Marquet. The next meeting will be on March 25, she added. One Third Of Vehicles Flunk Test RALEIGH — Over one-third of the 3,426,111 automobiles inspected in North Carolina during 1974, failed to pass their original examination, according to Jake Alexander, Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Figures compiled by the Enforcement and Theft Division of Motor Vehicles, show that 976,469 vehicles of the 1974 total had equipment defects. Enforcement and Theft administers the automobile inspection program required by the state. Lights, including headlights and others, topped the list of defective equipment with a total of 758,599. Directional indicators ranked second with 136,127. Other equipment found defective included wipers, 92,007; foot brakes, 82,777; tires, 81,972; horns, 29,510 and steering mechanisms, 16,653. Jim Wilson, an En forcement and Theft official, points out that repair costs were slightly more than $1 for each vehicle sticker issued during the year. Equipment repair costs totalled $3,620,971.82. There were 5,974 stations and 17,968 mechanics licensed to inspect motor vehicles in North Carolina for the 1974 period. GOODWILL MOTOR CO., INC. Pontiac—Buick 220 S.
