Science For You! t—v\\m BY BOB BROWN PROBLEM: Magic rising paper. NEEDED: Tissue paper, a gummed envelope flap, a dish, a match. DO THIS: Roll the tissue paper and stick the edges with tiny pieces of the gummed flap of the envelope. Stand it on the dish, set fire to the top and, as the flame burns toward the bot tom, the remains of the tube will rise into the air. HERE’S WHY: The heat of the flame produces an upward current of air — enough to lift the lightweight paper and ash. The idea for this came from the magician’s magazine, The Linking Ring. Magician Bill Pitts tells in the magazine how he extracts a mysterious vanished dollar bill from the burning tube. That is magic; the science part is the rising of the burning tube. The paper rolled into a tube may be stuck with tiny bits of rubber cement instead of paper. Try different size rolls and different paper. Magician Pitts recommended a roll two inches in diameter and eight inches high. As always, be careful of fire. It is always dangerous. Reduced-Price Lunch More More children who are unable to pay the full cost of a school lunch may qualify for free and reduced price lun ches, according to Ralph Eaton, School Food Services Director for the Department of Public Instuction. According to Eaton, ap plication for the free or reduced-price benefits of the National School Lunch Program are usually made in the fall. However, in view of the hardships facing families since that time due to inflation and unemployment, the an nouncement is again being made. Children from families whose income levels are low may be eligible, as well as families with hardship con ditions due to high medical costs, expenses, shelter costs in excess of 30 per cent of income, and temporary loss of income from lay-offs, short time or other employment conditions. Each affected family must apply and be appoved by a designated school official for a free or reduced price meal or free milk in terms of present weekly or monthly total in come, said Eaton. Such total income must include all benefits being received, including strike benefits, he added. Any temporary eligibility ceases as soon as the family income exceeds the applicable guidelines. Forms for application for free and reduced price meals are available from the prin cipal’s office of the school a child attneds. Eaton pointed out that information provided on the application is con fidential and will be used only to determine eligibility. The identity of the child benefitting from the program is also confidential.
