Hints From, The County Extension Chairman By - Jerry Purser Budding and Grafting This spring why not try your hand at some budding and grafting. Advantages in cluding developing a plant more quickly, having a better root system and maintaining certain varieties difficult to propagate by cuttings. Most ornamentals, flowering trees, roses and shrubs can be grafted. The plant species being grafted depends on the type of grafting technique involved. Types of grafting include whip, cleft, bridge, splice, saddle, side and veneer grafting. A bulletin, published by North Carolina State University, entitled, Budding and Grafting, explains how each grafting technique is done along with a list of plants that can be grafted. The list also shows the type of graft recommended and the time of year each should be done. This bulletin is available at the Extension Service Office. Fertilizing plants Most fertiliser materials are in short supply. Local sup pliers have some fertilizer analyses available such as 8-8 8, 10-10-10, 5-10-10. Not only has fertilizer material become scarce, it is also expensive. No longer can you afford to waste fertilizer materials by making excess applications. We recommend you take a soil sample anywhere that fertilizer has to be^appliedT Check •ecarity i«ab<r ... it’a a vital This is a free service in North Carolina and mailing cartons, along with information sheets, are available from any of the agricultural workers in Transylvania County. Plants, like people, are better off if fed often and not too much of any one type. The amount you use will depend on the fertility of your soil and how fast you want your plants to grow. Keep in mind that phosphate and potash move very slow through the soil, while nitrogen leaches out rather quickly. In most cases only nitrogen will be needed when fertilization of plants is done. Sale of Un-inspected Meat The wholesale meat act passed by the federal government states that any meat offered for sale must be processed under state and federal inspection programs and have their stamp of ap proval. It is not legal for a farmer to cure country meat and offer these products for sale if the meat is not prepared under the meat inspection program. A farmer may kill and process meat at home for his own use. Planting Shade Trees In locating shade trees, it is well to know the ultimate size. You’ll want to be certain that there is space for the tree to spread its branches as growth progresses in years to come. No limbs should eventually overhang a building. And, be certain to look over-head — avoiding planting beneath power lines. Too frequently, we plant a tree that will grow to a height of 40 feet beneath electric lines. This adds expense to the operation of the power or telephone company, and you end up with a tree they have to butcher. We should take care that trees are not being planted too close together.
