THE EVERYDAY COUNSELOR BY DR. HERBERT SPAUGH This is Holy Week in tlie church calendar. It brings to a climax the observance of the 40 days of the Lenten season. Each year it has been my custom in this column to draw attention to the pattern and purpose of the observance of this week and to rehearse briefly the events of the last week in the life of our Lord before His cruxcifiction and resurrection. (Matthew 21-27) On Palm Sunday Jesus and His deciples came from the little town of Bethany into the city of Jersulaem to make His last offering of Himself to His people. He was greeted by the city with casual interest. It is recorded that the city was “stirred” by a procession, but not stirred to any real action. He returned to Bethany Sunday evening and spent the night. Monday has been called the day of cleansing. It was on this morning that Jesus came back to Jerusalem with His disciples and visited the temple. It is recorded that He “cleansed” the temple by driving out the money changers and those who were selling merchandise in the temple courts. It calls us to cleanse our hearts and our minds of all that is evil by yielding them anew to Christ as our Lord and Saviour. Tuesday was marked as a day of controversy. It was on this day that Jesus was engaged in controversy with many of the church leaders. They engaged Him in many arguments. An account of these can be read in the gospels, particularly the gospel of Matthew. Many of these were trick questions. For example, there was the question of whether it was right and lawful for a Jewish citizen to pay tribute to Rome and to the emperor. Jesus replied, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” Wednesday has been called the day of silence because Jesus spent most of the day quietly in the home of his friend Mary in Bethany. It was a day of quiet communion with His friends and with His Heavenly Father. All of us need to observe such a day. God provided one day in seven for this purpose, but few of us use it for its original purpose of rest, prayer and meditation and inspiration. Thursday is called Maundy Thursday which means commandment Thursday. It was in the Upper Room at the Passover Supper that Jesus gave the commandment in stituting the Lord’s Supper, “This do in remembrance of me.” The so-called 11th com mandment was given at this time, “A new commandment I give unto you that ye love one another.” The commandment to service was likewise given at the same time. When Jesus engaged in the symbolic act of washing the feet of His disciples showing His willingness to serve them, He said, “If I then your Lord and Master have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.” Life of service to God and your fellowman is a vital necessity for us here and hereafter. This is the third commandment of Jesus. Friday has been called Black Friday or Good Friday. It showed evil in its worst and blackest form. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only beogtten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) As the hymn writer puts it, “The cross of Christ towers Claude Owen Dies At 66; Rites Held Claude Baxter Owen, 86, of Rt. 1, Lake Toxaway, died unexpectedly Thursday evening in Transylvania Community Hospital.
