Husband who is breaking up his marriage with wife who loves him to marry another who has east a spell over him needs his wife's sympathy and if she can give it frequently can keep him until death do them part. DEAR MISS CIIATFIELD: Because my husband and I couldn't afford to live to ourselves, we have lived with my family since our marriage two years ago. During this time I have worked hard to help earn enough to give us our own home. Now he comes in and says he doesn't love me any more and has found the girl he does love. I have pled with him for one more chance to make him happy, promised that I would follow any plan he lays out. Yet he refuses point blank because he says his heart would always be with the other girl. He offers to be my friend, visit me occasionally just as a friend. A heartbroken wife will thank you for any help you can give her. HEARTBROKEN. ANSWER: Use all your powers of persuasion to make your husband post pone hasty action and, if you fail, retire gracefully and let him go his cruel way. In the name of all that's fair and fine you haven't merited what he has given you. But the emotion which he calls love is neither fair nor fine. The fact that you have worked to help him get ahead doesn't count with him while he is under the spell of the new infatuation. The knowledge he is tearing your heart out by the roots won't cool his fever. It will have to burn itself out and it probably will. In Noel Coward's new play. ' The Astonished Heart," a gentle, understanding wife deals with a similar problem. She shows such infinite tenderness and patience with her husband that while he is racked with fever for anoiher woman he turns to the wife for com fort and advice. There the stands to sympathize with him while her heart is breaking under the lead. It is the old mystery, ever old and ever new. a mystery which no woman can fathom: that a man can love his wife with the best side of his nature and at the same time desire another woman. How can a wife use her wits when her heart is anguished0 She can't unless she can reason with herself and see that her one hope lies in making the husband feel her friendly sympathy and understanding in his predicament. And he needs sympathy, too: for no man is at peace with himself when he is breaking up his marriage with a wife who loves him. There is his conscience prodding him to play the man. his wife beseeching him to give her another chance, desire for the other woman eating him like a canker and if the other woman has no conscience there she is pulling and tugging at him to get him loose so he can marry her. Don't suppose that any man ?though his cruelty out Herod Herod' can be happy in such a mess! The wife who can f ee cleaily through her tears and behave dispassionately in spite of her riotous emotions, usually wins out in the end. CAROLINE CHATFIELD.
