' i : Poor . Old Gates County. We had never thought sve would have to bow oitr head in shame for old (Site. Her honor has always been dear to us and her name the synonyimj of all that was excellent in virtue and heroic in manhood. But, alas! sve have lived to see it fall and have "its name stained svitb dis" grace. Countrymen of the Willeys, the (latlitigs, the Parkers, the Coop ers, tbe Huberts, tbe Morgans, the Smiths,' and others as high up in tbe roll of honor, sveep svitb us at her degradation. The commissioners of Gates coun ty are George J. Costen, J. V. Sparkman and Nathaniel Euro. The two tirst are Pub-Pops, of tbe dark est, deepest dye. Tbe last is a true IK morrat. but liclpless m tbe bands of bis ignoble associates. Some sleeks sitce they drew a jury pre paratory to the meeting of tbe Su-H-rior Court for the county last week. When they svero drawing the jury they called on Jim Jenkins, a back negro and Republican poli tician, to; assist them in selecting a jury. Kvery one svbose name was dra.vu svas submitted to tbe liegro. Jim. to pronounce upon bis fitness as a jur.ir. If be said no, be svas thrown out : if" Jim accepted him be svas, accepted. When the outrageous ceremoiis? sas tiuisbed Jim bad selected 14 negroes, and rejected as decent srhite men as- svere to be found in the county. We don't knosv Costen nor Spark man, the two nice commissioners, and we base no ambition to knosv them. We once knew a George Costen and his father, James, but sve are sure bo ssould not so dishon or his lineage as to be a party to such. a disgraceful transaction. The mere; suspicion of it nauseates us. We dismiss the foul thought. We beg pardon for tbe unwelcome sus picion. Jim svas not a commissioner, nor an officer of any kind, but ssas simply an officious adviser of a mis erable majority of tbe county Board of (Commissioners, svbo needed tbe advice of Jim's superior intelligence. So:ue of tbe negroes Jim selected bad not paid their taxes, and bad to pledge their jury ticket for the pay ment. I , When ' Judge Hryau learned of this disgraceful procedure, be direct ed the solicitor to call tbe attention of the Grand Jury to tbe conduct of the commissioners, and to suggest t'aelr'indictment. The decent peo ple of Gates county are outraged by it, and the honored name of Gates counts U in tbe dust. There is sometimes talk of negro cpiality, but tbis baud of degraded Republican politicians have placed tb?mselves beTosy tbe equality of Ibis offensive negro. via pirrirel r'a,,7 'or you. wbicli ' we man ireo. i ireu ui 1x10 mni-h tlnn1m-vormiL tr. that every cbiia 1 liable to and lor Uicn I Frey's Vermifuge fe: habn roecess folly used lor a Dan century. r E. The election of tbe town commis sioners for Elizabetb City takes place on tbe 10th of May prox. We sup pose tbe present Republican incum bents will be candidates for re-elec tion. It' is acknowledged on all bands tbat they are incompetent aud have utterly .failed to adminis ter tbe affairs of the town with wis dom and discretion. Every -step tbev have taken has been a fatal mis- step. Seeley is the only commis sioner among them who is any account. They have added to our indebtedness. They have in creased our taxes. They have stood by with their bands in their pock ets and eyes turned sunward, wbile horses stalled and men mired on our principal streets- The Demo crats will probably make no nomina tion. Let the Republican voters look to it. A Hero Dead. Thomas II. Tampliu, a native of Camden counts, a brave Confederate soldier, a true man, a member of tbe 17tb North Carolina Regiment in tbe Confederate svar, departed tbis life at his home in St. Louis, Mo., svbere be bad resided for twenty years, on Wednesday, April " 7th, 1807, after a long illness resulting in dropsy, aged 5'.) years. Tom Tamplin svas one of tbe brav est men tbat ever dress sword. He svns as near insensible to fear as any m;iu that has lived. He managed and fired the gun that drove back the Harriett Lane at the battle of Hatteras. He svas in many fights and svas body ssounded at tbe local battle of "Tuttles Run" in Pasquo tank count. Peace, kind friend, true man, devoted lover of bis old home and friends A Fat Boy. Currituck is a great, count-. It svas the Keystone of the Democratic party for years and is so. still. It produces the finest ducks, and geese, and swan, and snipe, and bull frogs, aud the oldest men in North Caro lina and the most stalwart, hearti est, healthiest- men in the State. And now to all these products it adds a product of a fat bdy 13 years and six months old svbo weighed on April Ctb 430 pounds. His name is Less is T. Lewark. He has 10 broth- eis and sisters svbose sveight ranges from 180 to 250 lbs. His parents are under medium size and sveight, his ancestors svere sometimes fat people, shosving that qualities skip parents and reproduce remote ances tors. " . Asparagus. The asparagus season -bas opened svitb an' abundance of tbis magnifi cent segetable, and of the finest quality sve base ever knosvn, health laden aud palatable. Nollie Morgan, one of our converts and apprentices, leads the market. He -has been on the market this sveek. 1 His bunches are large and the shoots are as large as your thumb, that is to say, if your thumb is not abnormally large. He sells big bunches, and no other, for 25 cents 'a bunch. The market is abundantly supplied with a second class article. But svhen Nollie come3 in we slip arouud the corner, on be by ways, and sell small bunches on the slv for 10 cents a bunch. We are not given to magnifying our own svorks: But sve claim to be the father of asparagus culture in this locality, as sve can xirove from our files. Nollie is our apprentice, and he regularly eomes into our office when the first. of the season opens, with a splendid specimen, just to make us feel mean,, and be has never donated us with .a bunch but once. We give Nollie notice. He -rants to succeed Arthur as Pres. of the Coon and Possum Club, and when Arthur is discharged . on account of age, we won't vote for Nollie if be don't stoD,. or unless be gives us a couple of big bunches of bis best every season. If sve bad money like Nollie has,, we'd beat bim out of bis boots on asparagus. No small objection which young folks had to the old-time spring-medicines was their hauseousness. In our day, this objection is removed and Ayer's Sarsaparilla, the most power ful and popular of blood-purifiers, is as pleasant to tbe palate as a cordial. . A hurried search by tho partly masked footpad and then an excla mation: . "Only a quarter! That all you got!" 44 That's all, stranger, an that represents the work of sawin ! half a cord of wood. I laid out to.spend that for meat at the market on the corner - ahead 15 cents Of it for shoulder steak, ai the 10 left was to go for two loaves of bread at the grocery round the corner." 4 4 Well, you've got your groceries yet," answered the mask. 44 You may put down your hands and pick 'em up now." Then tho man with the lean face stooped dosvn and, after a minute ex amination of the small, collapsed packages on the pavement, said : 4 'The 'quart of beans is busted an scattered all over tho ground, an the sugar is, too 10 cents' w'uth. I surely don't, stranger. Times has been mighty rough on us this winter, stranger. I don't mean to complain at the ways of Providence, but seems to me my lines is mighty hard , some times. Noss- he turned and came back. ' 44See here, you! I'll allow I'm a gambler, thug and all .that and more, and I can stand a good deal, but your hand is too much for me. You hold all the best cards. I'm a bad man from svay back, but here's your quarter, and here's a dollar to go with it. No, take it; get more beans and butter and things for Ma ria." Down the dark alley plunged the bad man from way back as a po liceman appeared in the distance, and as he disappeared in tho gloom he muttered: 4'1 wonder if I couldn't braco up and be like that man ? An anecdote of Disraeli is told by a writer "in Blackwood's. Mr. Griffin and his daughter; Lady Simpkinson, travel ing voiturier and halting to rest the horses at a posthouse some hours from Munich, suddenly became asvare of "a most disconsolate figure, with long, dark curls, lean in 2 dejectedly against one of the nillars of the porch. " It was Dis- raeli on his wedding tour. The sight of his friends aroused him to tell his tale of woe. He had failed to xicognize the fact that he had been for some hours re tracing his steps instead of proceeding to Innsbruck, as he" had intended, and had reached the posthouse to find no horses available for his return. The du plicate mistake had been made by a couple - desirous of reaching Augsburg and at that moment speeding on a re turn journey of their osvn to Inusbruck.
