Iii the kcown acd unknown his-, lory of John Wilkes Booth, Afcra- tan Lincoln murderer, there is a Chapter which Is reTealeJ for tho Crst tlmo now; cays a contributor . to the 8L LouU Republic. it deals with Booth's political cmtlxneat. Strange as it may eeexn, they were with the north at the out- Ireak of the war. Professor August j Waldauer, an old ana prominent cftixea of EL Louis, Touches for the truth of this statement What caused the chance in the heart of the erratic Booth can only bo surmised in Tiew of the fact that he eipieefed emphatic northern sen timents. This tardy and interesting infor mat ion about the great political murderer is given in Mr. Waldauer a own language: MItwas in April, 16lrwhen Mr. Booth passed through this city and paid me a visit at the old Do Bar Opera House Naturally the confer eaticn centered on the war, for hos tilities had just commenced, and I asked Booth to which side he in- . dined. His answer was very em phatic. 'An actor,' said he, 'has co business to meddle with politics or . to capouse either tido. I have' to play in the south as well as in the north, the east and the wcL It would not do for me, a young actor, to take issue with cither side. "''But said I to him, 'you must . have some opinion about the issues involved. Suppose you had to go to war. With whom would you take eidosl' "Deliberately and without hesita tion he answered, I have mado up my mind never to fight aganist the old flag.' . 'But you hall from Baltimore,' I persisted; 'and your estates are in the Southern. Confederacy.' " 'No matter said Booth sternly. 'Let come what mty, I have made up my mind never to fight the old flag.' "So stern and emphatic was this declaration that the words engraved themselves on my memory forever, In tho winter of 1664 I had nearly finished my translation of Scribe's comedy 'A Glass of Water.' Booth was at that time playing a brilliant engagement at . Do Bar's Opera House. I submitted a sketch of the translation to him. He liked it and asked me to finish it for him, as he intended to bring it out during his X85S season. The following summer I had business in New York. I took with me my manuscript, which was ready for the stage, and delivered it to Mr. Booth. He read it, accept ed, it and we camo to a satisfactory conclusion of the dent Wo were to gether almost constantly during my Yisit to tho metropolis, and he seem ed to bo as lively and cheerful as erer. There was no indication of a change in his political sentiments. Nothing seemed farther from his Intentions than to prepare for a prosperous season late in the falL . 'Tour weeks after my return from New York he tent me back my man oscript, accompanying it with a few lines. Six months later, on tho ICth of April, came the terrible news of Lincoln's assassination at the hands of Booth.
