Departed, this life very suddenly on Saturday at 3 p. m.,Mrs. Margaret Palmer aged 84 years and G months, having been born in June 1813. The deceased was, we think, the oldest white person in this town. She was of amiable disposition, kind and motherly, benevolent and char- table. Her physical condition was well preserved and her mental facul ties were unimpaired. She kept .up her interest in current, social and public affairs to the last, her busi ness affairs received her personal at tention, and her last act a few min utes before her death was to affix her signature to an important busi- ness paper, after winch sheteii aeaa before the ink was dry. Mrs. Palmer was a native of Pas quotank county and her whole life was passed there and in this com munity. We tender to the strick en household our sincere condo lence. - The entering wedge of a fatal com plaint is often a slight cold, which a dose or two of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral I might have cured at the commence ment. It is an ecclesiastical I 1 . fast which has been observed oy me Anglidan, Greek and Roman Cath olic churches from the ; earhest ages rhnrch. It is coeval with Christianity. Some christian bodies regard it as a superstitious interpo lation "into the church, unknown to its early history, and having its origin" in the monkish innovations of the dark ages. Whatever maybe the reasons by able theologians upon the subject,it is apparent that Christ himself, the Saviour, and great ex emplar of christian practice, frequent ly commended fasting in company with prayer, and devoted forty days to special prayer and fasting, accord ing tq the scriptures, and thus set us the example of special ; devotion with fasting, humiliation and prayer.
