Bids for a site on which to erect a public building in Eliza beth City hive been invited by the Tnaury Department. Bids will be opcued May 10th. There have been several transfers of real estate in town this week. Mr. l'rauk Vaughan has transferred a lot on Burgess street to Mr.. V. L. Vaughan, for a cu.miU ration of 1,110. The old lij;l.i Lou?o at Wade's Point at the mouth of Pasquotank IUvtrwill be taken down, the new one Ining completed. The Light I Iosj-o Tender Violet went down Monday to remove the old light. It is a g OvI hign of r regret, the building of so luarxy new houses as residences. 1'erbars never beforo in the LUtory of the town have there been o many new residences gcing up. Houses for rent are in demand. Wc had a pleasant call on Satur day from J. M. Clayton, one the Board of Shell Fish Commissioners 'of Enlehard, Hyde county; and P. B. Hooker, of Bayboro, Pamlico ' County.one cf the Board of Shell Fish Commissioners. Edward Pettigrew, a worthy old co!ord man who has long been the faithful sexton of Cnfist Church, has resigned his poiition, on account of the intirmites of age. He was a pclite and efficient sexton and a faithful member of the church. Our merchants are on the look out for the tlshermcn who are about c!oiug the season". The tail end of the seamen has shown an increase iu the run cf nh and it is hoped that many down in the mouth fisleruieu yet have 4titt upper lips.1 Bishop O. G. Fitzgerald will pieach the annual sermon at the approaching Commencement of Lit tleton Female College. Be v. T. N. Ivev will deliver the literary ad dress and Bev. J. S. Williams will preach the Sermon before the Young Ladies Missionary Society. We aro indebted to H. S. Cason, of Edenton, for an invitation to the Commencement Exercises of the Marvland Medical University, at Baltimore, in the Acade my cf Mus ic on Tbursdav, April 20ih. at 12 M. Wc think Mr. Cason will be Dr. CaKn after tho Commence ment. The protracted meeting held in the, Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Pcnick, the pastor and Btv. J. C. Skinner, grows in in interest and there have been several professions and many havo stood up for the prayers of the Christian pcoplo of tho'congregation. Large congrega tions attend a I the .meetings. The town is full of saitor, jury men, litigants defendants, specta tor., dignitaries and officiaLs tn:s week, iu attendance upon the Fed eral Court, Judge Purndl presiding. Tho Judge wears the ermine with ability, dignity and gentlemanly " courtt-sy. He is not a politician. of the lower tTje, and his opinions aro just, lucid and impartial. In his personality he greatly resembles his distinguished grandfather, Governor Dadley, who was the first Governor of North Carclin by popular vote, after the Convention .of 1S33. He represented tho. Whig party and defeated Governor Sxfight who was a Democrat We had a kind call from Judge Purnell, accompanied by Heywood Sawyer, Esq., oa Wednesday. j Oar old friend. E'.ihu . White, of Belvidere, was in to see us on Tues day. Our conversation was inter esting jand instructive to us. That section of Belvidere is underlied b? a rich deposit of uiarl that some times crop out to the surface acd ia generally found three feet below, and if lime be the agricultural fcrti- ej lizcr that t-orne Kay, Belvidere lands are oi great value. . We are indebted to Mr. Andrew Hathaway, of the House of Hatha way Bros., for several private sere naJeson tno grapbophone this week. His reproductions of old time stand ard songs and of IngersolTs speech at tho tomb of Napoleon, of Bryan's speech at Chicago and of Dr. Tal mage's sermon on the canonical books of scriptore, strike us with wonder and amazement Our devil who is a bicycle man asks us to say a word "about Jerry atcra and his nice track for cycl iets at the park, and about its pleas ure to the people and about tho nice time the young ladies and beaux had thero Sunday. What ! said we, Sunday! Yes, said he,they rode on their wheels, stirred up the monkeys, listened at the Catamount bellow, made the bear growl, and poled the wild cat until his eyes turned green. Sunday! said we, Yes, said he. . Whj? Why? said we. lcs, why? said the devil. Because said we. Well, whj 'because said the devil. WelllccauKe,the Fourth command of the decalogue tells us to keep the Sabbath Day holy, and make it a day of rest from labor and, inferentially, from pleasure. To the kind friend who sent us a hundred elegant smoked herrings this week, and wEb, with more mod est v thau ambitions wishes his name withheld from the public, we ten- ilcr most profound thanks. There is no better supper than a fat roe herring cooked to a brown by an old timey mammy of the ante hel lion type, and if it be smoked with harel hickory wood so much the bet ter, and if enough smoked and not too much smoked so much more bet ter. Such a rood herring,so prepared, cannot be beat as a supper meal, and if. as an accompaniment, it has .half a dozen brownv biscuit who have risen by their own unaided man hood, and two cups of fresh Mocha freshly roasted, then that man is a happier man that Napoleon in all his glorr, and can defy fate and sleep well o'nights. Henry White, of Belvidere, Per quimans county, a month or more ago, attended a.Friends Meeting" in Hertford county, and in tho as signment of visitors among the neighbors ho was assigned to the amily of Mr. J. J. Brown. During he stay of Mr. White he was asked by Mrs. Brown if he ever visited. Elizabeth Gity. He said, yes, quito often. She then told him she was born in Elizabeth Citjr and lived there until she was six years old,and was taken by her father, Joseph Morris, to Hertford county in 18G7, where she had since lived. She said uribcr that she bad once an aunt in Elizabeth. City by tho name of Mrs. Jennie Kenyon, but she heard hat she died some years ago. Friend White, with characteristic Quafcer kindness, told her that he would search the matter and fin'd out all about her family.
