There were many competitors, and some professional scorchers were in the list, but our Sam, tho young knight with his vizor down, was the winner, with two other close seconds, and there was a happy boy in our devil department on Wednesday. Oar town observed tho 4th of July on Tuesday, by closing stores in tho evening and attending the bicycle and trotting races at the ark. We. had a delightful call on Thursday from Mr. H. S. Doxsee, of Ocracoke. N. There is no better index of the character and efficiency of the author ities of a town than tbe condition of its streets, and especially of Its side walks. Our last city authorities, now deceased, owed most of the had odor and reputation that thoy left behind them to the neglected condition of the streets during their administra tion. We know that tbe condition of the streets especially Poindexter furnished us with a constant supply of amunition fcr cur Philippics.' Hence, we want our present aiayor ana Aldermen, who were our choice, to be invulnerable on Ihe street question. And therefore we call their attention, in time, to the pavement on the north tide of lower Marn street. It is dan gerous to life and member, and to the pursuit of happiness and business W e venture to say tbat our worthy Mayor and Policemen could not run at full speed down tbat locality at night with out breaking half their necks, and we are sure if they got bv Seley's grocery store, and W.E. Evans' grocery store n safety, their first impulse would he to fall on their knees and give thanks for their safe deliverance. We know not whose duty it is to keep that pave- ni in aaft eoadltio, bsrt w kmow tbat tks 1ajcr and AIdrsan r the custodians of our personal safety on the public thoroughfares, and that ihe town is liable for damages in case we sustain p ersoral injury from their neglect, and we are sure if we under took to run at full speed down the north side of East Main street, our neck woulJ pay the pecalty, to bo col lected out of the corporation. There is just now in .North Carolii a and eUevthere in the country a high tide of feeliuK on the subject of the public reads. In the construction of roads Mecklenburg county leads the Stntp.and the authorities of that his tdrlc county have iniiojed a large tax upon the citizens of the county to be extended in the impproement of the county roads, and the people of the county, especially the farmers, are unanimous in the Opinion tbat the tax is a public benefit and that the tax zaoney wu wisely invested, and that they art already compensated for the tax by the saviogot expense in the transportation of farm products, and their comfort and happiness greatly promoted by the facility with which they can now attend chjich and tbe social and religious occasions, and thej business men of Chajrlotte, the county seat, tay that it has increased their business trade with the farmers of the county; and an apparent object lesson which gctd roads in tbe county fur nish is the improved condition of the ii draft stock. A poor norse in me county of Mecklenburg, is now an ob ject of curiofity. and their changed appearance is a subject of general re mark, t The probability is that in the scale of county roads Pasquotank occupies the other end of the scale from Mec lenburg. The alluvial character oi our soil, its slight elevation above tide water, the dampness of our climate and the constant use of our roads are the causes of our lowest position on th scale of roads ot North Uarolica. And unless we put oar sholders to tbe wheel of the ffood road movement we Mr. Ben. Spruill returned home Friday, to spend tbe summer holidays. We are clad to fee you again, friend Bennle. The London of Fepya. ft Is disappearing fast; It has almost vanished, the London of Pepys; but a few traces of it are still left and should be visited by lovers of the past and readers of the famous "Diary" before they are entirely swept away. Regret can never cease .that a threat ening of blindness should have forced Pepys to close his manuscript 34 years before his death and that thus it should 'only depict 11 years of his life for us. Yet, as Mr. Lowell said, "the lightest part of the diary la of value, historically, for It enables one to see the London of 200 years ago, and, what Is more, to see It with the eager eyes of Pepys;" while there will be few of Its readers who will deny that "there 13 probably more Involuntary humor In Tepys' Diary than in any book ex tant" rail Mall Magazine.
