CHAMPION OF ROOSEVELT Pittsburg Man Found Beaten tn Death Beside Road Near Salisbury. Salisbury, N. C, Oct. 21 A man, whose name is supposed to he ,1. C. Balrd. of Pittsburg. Pa., was found beaten to death by the roadside, near this city, early this morning, and the coroner's jury ban returned a verdict that he came to his death at the hands. of unknown parties The body of the man. who appealed to be forty years of ae. was identified iy articles in his pockets. The man had been rolibed. anil his face beaten into a jelly, but there is no clew to the murderer. A club cov ered with blond was found near tin body. The pockets had been cut open and rilled of valuables. ROYAL FLUSH KILLED HIM. in West Virginian Drew Lucky Card Poker Game and Fell Dead, Huntington, W. Va., Oct. 21. Col William Simms, p, well known stock dealer, fell dead at the Little Queen Club rooms here, this evening, while playing a game of draw poker with a party ot mends. I lie game was a big one, and Col. Simms had been win ning steadily for two hours. At J o'clock several hundred dollars' worth of chips were on the table before cards were drawn. When the dealer helped the hands. Col. Simms drew one card, and after looking at it. gave a gasp and fell dead. When examined it was found that he clutched in his stiffening hand a royal flush, having the ace, king, queen, jack and ten of diamond. Physicians were summoned, and af ter making an examination, pronounc ed death due to over excitement. FEAT ALMOST KILLED HIM. Washington Man ai Winchester Jump ed Headlong Into Pile of Bottles, Winchester, Va., Oct. 21. Laboring under a hallucination, Charles Cooper, an employe of a saloon in Winchester, but whose home is in Washington, D. C. this afternoon jumped headlong into a pile of bottles. He is still in a critical condition. ESCAPES FROM CAPTORS. Hindoo Mission Worker Kidnapped by Her People Returns. Binghamton, N. Y., Oct. 21. A large num ber of letters are being received by the Commissioner of Internal Revnue on the subject of alcoholic compounds such as patent, medicines, essences. .&(.. asliinst ' which rulings have re cently been made, and Commissioner Yerks is answering them as rapidly a t possible.
