It was Memorial Day through out the Southland. The local chapter of the IK D. C, through its uresident, Mrs. J. 11. Ander son, had invited the chief execu tive of the Mate to deliver the oration of the day in rayttteville. and in response to that invitation he was here, arriving on the llal igh & Southport train frora 1U1 eigh and being entertained w hile in the city by Air. and Mrs, J. H. Anderson, on Green street lireat preparations for an appro priate celebration had been made by the Daughters, and an inter esting program had been arrang ed. 4 he program was necessa rily amended on account of the very inclement weather, in spite of which, however, a great crowd was here, gathered from al Cum berland, from Robeson, Sampson and lUaden. Resides Governor Kitchin's ora tion, other features of the day's program were the splendid mili tary display, the decoration of the soldiers graves in Cross Creek cemetery, the dinner given the Veterans in the A rmory. songs by the Children's Chapter U. As the procession passed down Hay street it was reviewed by crowds from either side. When the Governor entered the Audito rium he was greeted by a throng that packed the house to its ut most capacity, while numbers were unable to gain admittance. Rev. Mr. Fairley offered a brief prayer, and this was fol lowed by 'Tenting on the Old Camp Ground," beautifully ren dered by a male quartet. The orator of the day was ap propriately introduced by Major Hale, and when the Governor arose he was greeted by a might? roar of cheers, led by the Veter ans, w ho were under command of Hon. Geo. M. Rose. For an hour and a half the Geat audience was held spell und and swayed hither and thither as it were by the magic of Governor Kitchin's thrilling words. To be sure not one was present but had the best emotions within him stirred by the speak er's burning eloquence and had inspired within him greater rev erence for the memory of the Confederate dead and more zeal ous Jove for the thin grey line, now fast growing thinner. Any attempt to tell what the distin guished speaker said would but uo him an injustice unless the speech were printed in full Upon conclusion of the magnif icent address the procession marched to the cemetery, w here loving hands again beautified with flowers and Hags the last resting places of the Confederate dead; the salute was fired by the military and the taps sounded, after which the military compa nies marched to St. James Square where a salute was tired at the Confederate monument. Then returning to the Armory a sumptuous dinner, prepared by the ladies, was served the Veter ans, Governor Kitchin and other guests numbering perhaps a thousand, and crosses of honor were presented to a number of the Veterans. There the Chil dren's Chapter sang.
